DAY 42: BATH AND BEAUTY SHOP

Jun 30, 2009 22:32

Grell was drawn by the smell first and foremost. While he didn't have an extraordinary sense of smell, he could discern that there was something in the air as he wandered down the main street. It was something heavenly, as thick and sweet as the perfumeries had been in England and France. The places he used to visit to see the latest fashions ( Read more... )

"Good morning, honey!" The friendly voice of Miss Dwight rang out through the little shop. "You've come in at a really good time, sugar. Why, I was just about to start setting out the sample basket, but you know what? Since it's so close to the holidays and all, why don't you just pick out a few things? I'll count them as a little holiday cheer for you, no worries, sugar. I'll even put a little note in the bag for you." The elderly lady smiled and nodded. That kind of thing was just so much fun, and really, it was a darn shame she couldn't just send more packages on up the hill.

Wait. Really? Grell paused and looked up at the woman who apparently ran the shop, his eyes widening. Did that woman just tell him to pick a few things out and take them? For free?

If it was possible for him to fall in love again, he would have. This woman was an angel. An absolute angel, sent from Heaven to relieve him of the stress that horrible Institute placed upon his delicate shoulders! And to think, not just one, but a few? A few luxury items he could take back with him, with a note saying it was alright ( ... )

"Oh, there's not any need to thank me," Miss Dwight nodded, a smile on her face. "Do you want me to wrap all that up for you? Oooh, you've made some good choices. That rose is one of my personal favorites, and the country apple is one of our best-sellers. Oh, and that floral soap is to die for, really." She nodded at one of the other girls in the shop.

"Now, you just get that wrapped up for the nice lady, and oh - do toss in one of the candy cane sample drops? You know, since it's that time of year and all," she said, moving over and taking out one of her business cards, writing a note on the back of it and signing it. She handed the card to Grell, saying, "Now, if they give you any trouble, you just show them that, all right?"

"B-but it's not often I experience such kindness, so..." Grell trailed off, fiddling with the ends of his scarf as his eyes shifted nervously between the proprietress' face and the objects on the counter. It wasn't that he thought she'd take them away, but rather that his character depended on it. Sometimes he really wished someone would catch a clue and break through his act, but then things like this happened and he realized how rewarding it could be to be an actress. "Ah, thank you, madam. My employer, may God rest her soul, was quite the lady and she used to teach me all about these sorts of things."

Lies, but they were good lies.

And oh! The owner had just called him a lady. A lady! A blush rose to his cheeks and Grell felt his heart skip a beat out of pure joy. Finally! Someone who wasn't just trying to placate him had realized his true nature! Reaching out, he took the card with a bow and gave the owner a small, happy smile. "I will. Thank you! And, ah..." That time of year? Candy canes? Frost on the ground ( ... )

"You're quite welcome," Miss Dwight said, smiling again. "And bless your heart, you must have had someone sweet that you worked for. She must have been quite a lady, indeed."

The girl behind the counter finished wrapping everything, tying a bright red bow at the top of the bag. "And happy holidays to you, too," they both said in unison, smiling brightly.
