Finding his way back to the stairs had been easier than Rufus would have thought. So far he hadn’t met up with anyone or anything. Standing there at the bottom of the stairs, he studied the maw of darkness before him. Going up without light was going to be dangerous, but the payoff could be worth it. There might be supplies of some sort up there too. Most places tended to throw their junk in closets or storage rooms as well as parts of shipments that were unused. There could be a crate of flashlights down there.
When he got back to his world, he was docking his Reno’s pay for a flashlight. He’d explain it somehow. Reno damaged more than enough Shin-Ra equipment to justify charging him for a flashlight. Rufus would frame the damned paid bill for it and put it on his wall in memory of this house of horrors.
Swallowing thickly, he started up, his hand on the railing to keep his balance. Unlike the two nights before, he tried to be as quiet as possible, keeping his steps light. If he saw the slightest thing that set off his interior alarms, he was backing up and getting out. He could try to come back upstairs another night when he had everyone and their cousin with him. Straining to see or hear anything in the darkness, Rufus headed up.
