It wasn't too long before the intercom came on again, harshly, flooded with static. The voice that came out of it was still human-sounding, but Lydia spoke in an even more pronounced monotone now. It was difficult to even make out the words.
"The caverns should have opened tonight... he isn't around to apologize. You all understand. Maybe you'll hear his voice later tonight..."
The static swelled until it was almost overwhelming, drowning out whatever words she might have said. But then it calmed, just slightly.
"We all have our parts to play, and that includes all of you. Maybe you might not like it, but you don't really have a choice."
She let out a breath.
"Unless you can get away."
She whispered something, but it was impossible to make out. The intercoms switched off suddenly and the doors promptly unlocked.
