Day 37: Intercom, Dusk

Dec 08, 2008 02:11

Among the sounds of roommates' conversations and the squeaking of plastic knives and forks, the intercom came on to announce the end of the day.

It was Lydia's strict voice that came through the intercoms in each room, and for once she sounded a little flustered. "Well, this is sort of sudden, but the head doctor had some important matters to take care of. But as you must all be used to by now, there will be some sleep studies going on tonight for five selected patients. Newcomers need not worry about that, though..."

There was a stretched pause, as if she was trying to remember what else needed to be said. While the head doctor tended to pad his announcements with trivial comments, all Lydia really cared to do was get to the point and then finish up. Public speaking wasn't exactly her thing.

"I hope all of the new patients had a good first day. You should all be adjusting to the institute soon enough. Sleep well, everyone."

A small sigh followed, and then the intercom clicked off.
