NIGHTSHIFT 21: Hallway to Soccer/Recreational Field

[[from here]]Sasuke paused outside the door to the block of rooms. He'd gone right last night and up the stairs. In the same direction was the Sun Room, the cafeteria, and the doctor's offices -- in sum, he'd been through a significant amount of the institute to the right. Which meant it was time to head left ( Read more... )

[ From here. ]

It was only when Greed stepped out from the cell block that he realized one very important thing.

Schuldig. Shit, he'd almost forgotten the guy, and had the punk been a less valuable underling, he might have stayed forgotten, but as things stood...

Wait a goddamn minute.

The homunculus found himself thinking back on their conversation the previous night, the one where Schuldig had so easily dropped the comment that he'd not only allied himself with someone else, but hinted that the other person was stronger than Greed.

A tide of resentment washed over Greed's mind, and it was with a begrudging sigh that he leaned against the wall next to the door and crossed his arms over his chest with blackened hands.

Five minutes. If the fucker didn't show up in five minutes, Greed would show him he was lucky to be in Greed's employ.

Vincent was never one to sit around feeling useless, especially when he'd managed for so long to escape unscathed.

Unfortunately useful entailed something beyond creeping aimlessly through the dark halls with no weapon or purpose. He couldn't go to that entry room again, not without some sort of ally, and both of his were undoubtedly confined to their rooms for the night.

He turned the corner and abruptly froze. Someone (thing?) was loitering just a bit down what had to be a massively long corridor, and after last night Vincent didn't trust him for a second. Outside the M-hall everything seemed fair game.

With near silence Vincent advanced on whomever was standing a few yards away, unsure of how to gauge his intentions but knowing at least not to give away his own position just yet.

If Greed had retained his above-average senses, he might have heard the approach of another man even on the soft slippers that all the patients were restricted to. As things were, it was only because the hallway was otherwise empty that the homunculus managed to hear the slight sounds of movement and whirled around to face whatever was near him.

Oh, another patient. Greed gave an uneasy smirk, feeling a bit off due to the fact that, for a moment, he had thought that it might have been a monster, and, for a moment, he had felt a level of helplessness unknown to him before he'd come to this place.

"...What?" He asked, wondering what this guy's intentions were, and in the back of his mind seeing this as a possible window of opportunity.

Vincent faltered, surprised he'd been heard, and hesitated. At least he was just another patient. He squinted at the other man, trying to get a decent fix on who he was dealing with. His vision seemed off without the usual light of a flashlight or distant moon, worse than usual, though it wasn't particularly surprising.

"...What's over this way?" Vincent said after a moment, gesturing down the long hallway.

Greed looked in the direction that the guy was gesturing at before looking back with a wry smirk.

"See, if I could tell you that, I wouldn't have resolved to ditch my backup if he doesn't show up in... about three minutes, now."

The homunculus then looked over the man, tried to size him up. His stature didn't seem to amount to more than sticks and pale skin, though if people like Kimbley and Schuldig had taught him anything, it was that you didn't have to be buff to be useful.

Or dangerous.

He glanced up at the guy's hair and then to his obscured face. Kimbley had had hair like that, when he'd first met him, and the resemblance--although sparse in the darkness of the hallway--was enough to put him on edge.

"I'm guessing if you're all on your own, you're either decent at fighting or really stupid." Greed said, not taking his eyes off the patient.

"I'd say that depends on how good you are," he quipped cautiously. Comparing strength and fighting ability in this eclectic place was useless, Vincent was beginning to realize.

His eyes wandered off, gazing around the wide hallway and trying to remember if he'd been this way before. It didn't look familiar, but he hadn't really gotten to opportunity to explore a whole lot since the last building shift.

Glacing back at the other man, he suddenly noticed the... gauntlet-type things covering his forearms. Hm.

"Are those natural or did you find them?"

Greed immediately knew what the guy was talking about and grinned a wide, sharp-toothed
grin, flexing his blackened hands in front of him.

"These are all mine." He said, voice full of a kind of competitive pride. In a show of power, he willed the carbon up to his elbows, and although it happened far slower than it should have, he didn't seem to have any qualms with bragging about it. "Hard as diamond, and unfuckingbreakable. They don't call me The Ultimate Shield for nothing."

He suddenly frowned, and stood up from against the wall.

"This place, though...." He looked back to the guy with narrowed eyes. "Do you know what the hell this bullshit is all about?"

...The Ultimate Shield? Right. But the any amusement he'd gained from the interesting nickname faded quickly as Vincent got a better look at his face. Something about it was off, but in this light he couldn't quite place it.

He shrugged. "I have no idea. We had a theory, but..." ...the more and more he became acquainted with this stupid, insane place the more he was beginning to feel Cid was wrong for the simple fact that it was impossible to make sense here at all.

"I think it's a game," he finished. "And I think your friend is late."

"I'm never late," Schuldig's voice announced, with its disconcerting ability to precede its owner. "I simply choose not to arrive when people are expecting me to."

The man himself eased out of the shadows a few moments later, the shadows peeling away as though they were reluctant to let go of him. "Anyway, liebling," he added in Greed's direction, glad that there was no possibility of either man's knowing German, "I had a headache, so you can shut the fuck up ( ... )

Greed's eyes narrowed at the appearance of his underling, or more accurately, his attitude. Not that Schuldig being an uppity bitch was anything new in these past few days, but this was the first time he'd been verbal about it instead of using more devious insinuations.

The homunculus' scowl turned into something of a smirk as he realized this was actually a change for the better. He preferred seeing the cards on the table, anyway, or else he was the only one playing with a hand the other could see.

He finally shrugged, smug again as he looked towards the telepath.

"Geez, someone's got his panties in a twist. I'm not eager to ditch you, just to get our asses moving." He nodded towards his new acquaintance. "Anyway, I was busy talking to..."

He looked to the guy, arching a brow.

"...What's your name, again?"

"Vincent," he answered automatically, far more concerned with the mention of... telepathy? Had that been what River used last night? He almost bothered to ask if they knew each other, but it was baseless and for now he was more content to observe than act. The only people he trusted at Landel's were injured, and he needed to find someone to ally with at least for the night; six days here was long enough to know that going it alone was not an option.

He glanced at the shorter man with the shock of red hair, unsure of what to make of him. At the very least he seemed like a jackass.

"Well, no one asked you," Schuldig groused in Vincent's direction. Still, something about the man's mind was penetrating even his twitchy irritability of the moment.

Vincent was an agony. The sheer levels of guilt and grief and self-loathing writhing in his head...it was like discovering Aya all over again. Maybe not quite as good, since he hadn't had a personal hand in bringing any of that pain about yet, but delicious all the same. And soothing, in a way; Schuldig was used to the minds around him being in turmoil and it put him at ease.

Without even meaning to, he started to grin.

Vincent, huh? One more name for Greed to add to his memory, though right now, he had more important things to worry about. The homunculus looked to Schuldig, expecting to have some trouble with telling him what to do in his bitchy mood only to find him grinning an eerie grin.

Fucking hell, Greed could never understand these crazy types, and yet another resemblance between the telepath and Kimbley's behavior put him on edge enough to want to get going even more than he had wanted before.

"Hey!" He walked over to Schuldig, nudging him hard with his hand as he began to make his way up the left side of the hallway. "You can be nusto later; for now, let's try getting somewhere."

He glanced to Vincent, his scowl turning into something of a smirk.

"You can come too, if you want."

Vincent blinked at the telepath's sudden outburst, realizing only after a moment exactly what had happened. The single action was more unsettling than anything River had done, but damned if he could place why.

And now they were moving, which was more than fine by Vincent. He nodded at the... Ultimate Shield (ha), shrugging elegantly. "Until I get where I'm going." He'd know it when he got there.

Schuldig snorted in Greed's direction as he moved to follow the homunculus, still inwardly basking in the almost ludicrous amount of angst that came from Vincent. "You had damned well better knock on wood when you say that. You take staying sane for granted."

Still, subject matter aside, Schuldig couldn't help snickering a moment later. "A man who doesn't know where he is leading a man who doesn't know where he's going and a man who's at home wherever he damned well pleases. We're a hell of a group."

"Yeah, yeah, save your philosophical bullshit for later." Greed said in response to both of Schuldig's comments as he sighed through a small smirk. So, the Vincent guy was gonna come with them, huh? The more people following his lead, the better.

The homunculus let his arms hang at his sides as he made his way down the hall towards what seemed to be a source of light slightly brighter than the dark shadows they'd come from. It took a moment before the homunculus arched an eyebrow and grinned a wide grin. They were heading towards some double doors with windows on either side of them, and where there were windows, there generally was an outside.

"Hey, gang, looks like we're heading in the right direction."
