Nightshift 36 - M35 (Clinic)

Oct 30, 2008 09:03

Tonight, Tamaki was determined not to get called away from his clinic duties! Or any of his other duties, for that matter! Not even the bombshell drop of running into Elena - older and with no memory of him - could sway him this evening ( Read more... )

Sheena walked into the clinic, sans Raine, with a stormy expression on her face. Her shoulders were tense and hunched forward, but she still managed to muster a half-smile for Tamaki.

"Hey."

All Raine said to her was "Do you honestly think I would?" She could keep a secret, thank you.

Even if she did feel bad for the girl, now; yes, Raine had grown up convinced she couldn't trust anyone, that she had to keep to herself as much as possible lest her and Genis' secret be found out, and she had been something of an outsider in every place she lived, in addition to wondering why their parents had thrown them away. While she had friends who knew and didn't care now, her fears had not been unjustified.

But at least she knew who and what she was.

She said to Tamaki simply, "Good evening," as she sat down at a desk. She was still looking for signs that he wasn't doing well, but as long as he was dealing with it all, she'd leave him alone unless he chose to tell her more. He likely had a multitude of other people willing to listen, and might not need her.

"Just making myself clear," Sheena snapped back when Raine finally followed inside. She sent her the Mizuho Glare of Death (for many reasons) even thought she knew Raine was one of the few that wouldn't be taken aback by it.

Stupid cold half-elf healer teacher bitch. How dare she push the ninja that far?

Sheena went to the dresser as it was directly across from the doorway and, after moving a few thing aside, nimbly jumped up and sat on the top of it, her back to the wall. She pulled a knee up to her chest and watched the room like a hawk, her eyes barely visible over her knee. She wondered how long it would take Forte to show up.

Forte walked in, trying to look composed. Still, he let out a small sigh of relief that he had the right room - Sheena was staring right at him as he entered. "Hi. I'm ready when you are."

Kratos entered shortly after Raine and Sheena, muttering his typical "Good evening", although this time he did not make a beeline for his usual position by the door.

"Tamaki, there are a few things I wanted to ask you about. They're not urgent, but I'd rather they not slip my mind."

Well, it looked as though Raine and Sheena were busy with their own...whatever. Tamaki only nodded back in greeting to them, left them to their own devices.

Which seemed to be the best course of action, as Kratos requested his attention immediately. He wondered what the older man wanted to talk to him about. He could only hope it wasn't more 'are you alright?' or 'what happened to you?' sort of questions. He was terribly sick of those!

"Of course," he said, nodding. "What is it I can do for you?"

Out of the corner of his eye Kratos noted Forte's appearance. Hanging around, still? It did look as though he had some business with Sheena, though...

"During the day some plans were discussed for a future mobile healing unit; Miss Sage was considering joining it, which means that she might be absent on some nights. Since that would leave just you and me at the clinic, I was wondering if it would be prudent to advertise for more help on the board. Although..." Kratos had managed to catch some strains of Raine's conversation; his eyes flickered briefly in her direction. "...it seems as though we might already be getting more staff on hand."

Tamaki nodded. "I'm in full agreement," he said, quite honestly. Though it perhaps got a bit crowded, they needed doctors. Real doctors. He'd been learning what he could, but there was only so much he could pick up and master without proper training. And none of the people who had promised to teach him actually had.

"We'll be glad for anyone we can get!" he went on, emphatically. Even just people willing to learn, but actual people with medical training would be preferred.

Maybe he could actually learn something more than first aide.

Back in the clinic again. It was funny. For the few times Sanji had been in here he didn't think he'd once actually gotten around to doing anything helpful. He moved aside to let Chopper in after him.

Now which one was in charge again?

"Hey," he asked to no one in particular. "Got someone with some questions."

"Yes?" Raine said, looking up. It was good to see people who were conscious and didn't seem to be actively bleeding come in...

At the mention of questions, she glanced at her book and then closed it, placing a bookmark in case she forgot what page she'd been on--unlikely, but sometimes studying made her forgetful of less important things. For example, eating or sleeping.

Chopper paused in the doorway, feeling nervous about meeting the people at the clinic now that he was here. He was glad that Sanji was with him; had he been alone, he would have hid and reconsidered going in...

He squared his shoulders, stepping inside (relatively) confidently as the chef started talking. He felt more confident when he saw that the lady who responded was someone he recognized: the lady he'd sat next to on the bus. What had she said her name was? Raine?

"I... I was wondering if I could help here," he told her, trying to shake off any remaining nervousness. He needed to be braver. "I'm a doctor..."

He had questions about the medicines he'd gotten from Usopp, too, but asking if he could help out came first.

"Our ship's doctor," Sanji confirmed with a nod. "I can vouch for him."

He might have followed up with some sort of flirtatious comment - Raine was a good looking young woman, after all. But with Nami's disappearance he just wasn't feeling up to it.

There should be no reason not to take the former reindeer seriously. Not with the general age of the other healers here.

Guy hadn't expected to see quite so many people crammed into one room. Apparently this operation had more support than he'd realized. For the moment he just stood in the doorway with his injured arm in a sling near his chest, taking everything in.

Surprisingly, there were two familiar faces among the crowd: Raine and Kratos. He had only met them once, but it was a slight relief to realize he knew some people here. The two doing stretches and some fighting stances were complete strangers, though he wondered why they were practicing moves like that in a clinic.

The people that both Raine and Kratos were speaking to were also unknown to him, though Guy had definitely seen them around. The members of this clinic were mostly veterans, it seemed. That made sense: only people who had been around for a while probably even knew it existed.

Not sure who he should be talking to, Guy remained where he was for the moment, figuring he could wait until someone was available to see to him.

Well, this should be interesting... Raine had no idea why Guy reacted badly to her presence, but since he needed help, she figured he'd control himself. Even Alita had--eventually.

"What happened?" she asked, coming over. She didn't reach for his arm yet, since first she needed to know what the injury was... but the fact that he might not be able to handle being touched hadn't crossed her mind.

Guy wasn't sure if he should feel relief or dread as he watched Raine head over. On one hand, at least they had met before. On the other, well.

So far, so good, but he knew that could go down the drain easily enough. And there would be six people watching as he let out a high-pitched yelp and tried to scramble toward the other side of the room. Seeing how Claude hadn't reacted that badly to hearing the news, Guy was beginning to wonder if he should just explain in order to avoid any embarrassment.

For now, though, he should probably answer the woman's question. He made sure to give her a smile before responding, never one to forget his manners even when facing his fear. "Another patient thought it was a good idea to apply pressure to my upper arm until it gave in," he explained. That was leaving out a good chunk of the story, but it wasn't something he felt he needed to share with her.

Now the question was: would she actually be able to help him?

Raine winced; she could sympathize. "And the bone broke, I take it." Better his upper arm than his lower, at least--it was less likely to completely snap. She'd seen the results of that, and it wasn't pleasant.

Because she didn't plan on doing anything painful yet, she said, "Let me look," and went to close the distance between them, reaching for the sling; she just wanted to see if he was bleeding, too. Anything painful like examining the break could wait until Guy was sitting down.

The center of the hallway looked spacious enough; they'd have to keep an eye out for people coming through, but that shouldn't be an issue.

"Ready?" Raine asked. She was already holding her improvised staff at an angle, half expecting Tamaki to attack as soon as she gave the word; Lloyd always did, and Zelos usually didn't hold back for long either. She'd be easy on Tamaki, though, and just stay on the defensive--at least until she knew what he was capable of.

Tamaki nodded. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to be doing. He held the rod randomly, hunched back and in on himself in an already defensive position.

"How should we start?" he asked, to let her know that he was indeed ready to begin.

Raine shook her head at how he was gripping his weapon. "Hold it like a sword--or a baseball bat, I suppose, if that doesn't work--since that's what you have experience with. And don't bend over like that; you need to guard yourself, but that's not an effective stance.

"I won't strike back for a while, until you've gotten used to the weight and balance of the rod. Now come at me." She could see that he was nervous and uncertain, but physically he did have the advantage; knowing that should give him enough confidence to attack. She had training he didn't, but hopefully he trusted her not to hurt him.

Tamaki nodded again and tried to adjust his grip on the rod. It wasn't like anything he was used to, but at the suggestion of 'hold it like a bat', he did as he was told. And came forward, swinging it with little skill or delicacy, simply striking weakly at Raine as he had been instructed.

He couldn't muster up the strength to strike in earnest - she was a woman! He couldn't strike at a woman! Even to spar, he'd never be able to live with himself!
