Nightshift 21: M51 - M60 Hallway

Barret certainly felt horrible, and it took him several minutes to get his bearings before bothering to move out into the hallway. He'd finished off his supper with no real enthusiasm to have his stomach satiated. The large man actually did regret his actions toward Yuffie. As awkward as she'd made him feel, she didn't deserve that little ( Read more... )

[coming from here.]

It was only after Reno had stepped outside of his own hallway that he flicked on his flashlight. He didn't think there'd be anything lurking this close to their rooms-something said the bastards liked to play with their food first.

He stopped in front of the hallway leading into Rufus's room. Before he could change his mind, he turned the corner, thinking there was a chance Rufus hadn't left yet. As he did, the beam of his flashlight fell onto something on the floor. It didn't register the first time, and it was a couple of seconds later before he turned the light back to that spot.

A note.

Reno picked it up, staring at the curt words written.

"Sonofabitch," he whispered. He knew perfectly well what Rufus had been thinking when he left this. Cutting down on the options. Making the choice for the Turk.

He leaned against the wall, switching off his flashlight to think for a minute. Dammit. He wasn't sure if this made it easier or harder. In fact, he wasn't sure of anything anymore. Was he supposed to take this as an order or as a dismissal? Both? Neither?

Although, he did have a clue if he took what Rufus had said about not being able to order him anymore.

Shit. He needed a fucking drink. And not for the first time, he wanted Rude here. He didn't care that that meant he wanted to drag his partner into this godforsaken place. He wanted the only person he could rant freely to without any worries.

Focus, focus.

Right. Get Elena. The President hadn't left him with much choice. He could run around trying to find Rufus, but not only would that be a wild goose chase, he didn't think Rufus even wanted him to do so. Besides. He'd said he'd follow orders, right?

Yeah. Make yourself feel better.

Shredding the note so that no one else could read it, Reno scattered the bits of paper behind him and left.
