[from here]This should be the last hallway they needed. Kurikara blocked out the snatches of conversation he'd heard in the previous hallway. Not his concern, not now

"You're not hearing me, buddy," Reno snapped, irritated again. "Rufus isn't here. And we can't get out. What, you think no one's tried? Trust me, I haven't been just sitting on my ass for the past two weeks."
He stalked past Rude, moving through the hallways. Not too much further. He'd focus on grabbing some pipes for now. Mentions of Rufus never failed to annoy him and while he knew Rude couldn't possibly know what had gone on between them, that wasn't the point.
"Yeah, well, whatever man," Reno replied flatly, tired of arguing, least of all with his partner.
He swept his flashlight through the hallway up ahead, skimming for anything dangerous. They'd been lucky so far, but a lot of the freakier shit tended to hide upstairs. Probably because it was where all the good stuff was.
His indifference didn't last too long, though, and he turned around abruptly, shining his flashlight into Rude's face. "What the hell do you want me to say, anyway?"
Once he'd gotten past the danger, Mello paused to make sure Sai was still following. He didn't switch on his own flashlight...the corridor was dimly lit by another small group, and he preferred not to draw attention until he was sure they weren't turned patients as well. The small knife in his hand felt like a throwing weapon, but he was sure it stabbed just as effectively.
Sai briefly considered getting another strip of cloth to put his arm in a sling and thus keep it somewhat elevated, but nixed the idea almost immediately. He still might have need for it yet, and if it was tied up he wouldn't be able to use it at all. No, this was best.
Pausing beside Mello, the ninja swept the hall with his eyes. "I'm not sure what's behind this door here," he said, pointing to the one in front of them. "I assume from what I've seen on the maps that it has something to do with where the nurses stay. Given as the nurses become dangerous monsters at night, I wouldn't risk it."
He then motioned towards the hall further down on their right. "Storage is that way. Some of the doors are locked, but can be broken down easily enough." From the sound of things, someone was already down that way as well, but it didn't appear particularly crowded.
Mello did not move on immediately, lingering in front of the door as he mentally called up the map he'd memorized earlier. There were a few slightly blurred spaces but he remembered these two hallways, remembered thinking it strange that the nurses had been given personal space when they weren't actually people

Nodding, Sai prepared to lead on in the direction indicated. Wishing ill will on others wasn't a very nice thing to do, but all the same it would be easier on the two of them if whoever was already in the hall took care of any monsters before they got to them

Safely past, and a great relief it was. Leon had had enough of losing battles in this place already, a couple easy nights were exactly what he needed right now.
Leon paused to regain his bearings, knowing it was not unheard of for two hallways in a row to be guarded by tough enemies. But this hall was very quiet, containing for the moment only two other patients, both of whom were clearly not of the brainwashed antagonist variety.
Finally, Leon looked back to see whether Seiya had joined him or not.
Even if Seiya did have some lingering urges towards heroism in general, this wasn't a fight she could take any part in. Full powers, whatever those powers might be, versus a human holding a flashlight? Seiya Kou was in pretty good shape, but that wasn't enough. And no one she knew was in that fight, from what she could tell. At best she'd have been in their way.
Besides, she was here escorting and being escorted by Leon. Letting him run along would leave her with strangers and leave him without a partner. She had her foolish side, but at least she knew what it was, and when to ignore it. Usually. "Okay. Up to which room first, then?" This was the hallway they'd sought, right?
Leon closed his eyes, visualising the map. He was seldom grateful for the less violent parts his military training, but the ability to remember maps clearly was definitely a useful thing. "There's two, on the lefthand side is a janitor's closet, on the right is something called 'general storage'. Both are about the same distance up. Three doors on the left, with a stretch of blank wall between the first and second. Four doors on the right, no big gaps."
The janitor's closet sounded better to Leon, since it would have mops and brooms and other things with long wooden handles, at the very least. But Seiya might know more about this world and its technology and might have some ideas about the general storage room.
"Let's start with the janitor's closet." Seiya suggested, thinking along the same lines as Leon. Something that'd give her more vulnerable, human body a little reach would be nice. Almost anything as a weapon would be an improvement over the slightly weighty flashlight. "We can check the other room after that."
With that, she headed up towards the two destination rooms.
John moved down the hallway much slower then he had liked. The only thing that kept him moving was the thought that if they stayed put the boy who had thrown Wolfram would attack them again. "Just a bit farther," he said, hoping that Wolfram wasn't far behind.
Somehow, he'd managed to get up. Wolfram's body seemed to heavily protest the movement, but he forced himself to ignore it and move anyways. He'd recognized Yuber as their distraction from the crazy boy, but he was so far out of it that he didn't verbally acknowledge it. He'd also heard the radio announcement; somehow it hadn't been broken in the process of being thrown, but the words jumbled together and didn't make much sense anyways.
He slowly stumbled forward, ignoring the pain as best as he could with one hand leaning against a wall while the other gripped onto his flashlight, which he'd managed to grab again in their escape.
"...What if... all the doors are really locked like he said?"
"They always say that," John replied, his hand on his head to steady his vision. "And even if they are all locked, we'll never know unless we try. What other choice do we have? I'm not waiting around to see what else will be thrown at us. There has to be an open door. We'll find it."
Wasn't John new here too? Then how would he know what they'd "always say" anyways? But he did have a point... they couldn't stay where they were, and it would be really hard to go back at this point.
Wolfram shook his head, regretted it instantly, lightly biting at his lip to keep from reacting too much. He still had some pride, and didn't intend to lose any more than he had to.
"Maybe... We'll find this chapel place. Didn't they say... there was no monsters there or something?"
"That--" Leon came up behind him and stopped. Panting, he bent over to rest his hands on his knees. "That wasn't fair!" He didn't know how it hadn't been fair, really, aside from the fact that Kadaj simply had longer legs than he did. How old was Kadaj anyway, seven?
On the plus side, they'd made it away from the dangerous patient in the hall. Hopefully he wouldn't be coming after them. Now did he want to do it again on the way back as Kadaj suggested? Not really. "You're crazy," the boy muttered, taking a deep breath to help even his out.
So it wasn't that bad. A lot of it was just a side affect of the crazy adrenaline rush he'd gotten from knowing that at any moment some crazed patient could have come after him. It didn't help that he'd done nothing but wear himself out almost every night over the past few days. If he could get by without casting spells tonight, all the better.
Leon had straightened up soon enough, if only so he could glare at Kadaj. "I'm not dull!" He insisted. "I don't want to take unnecessary risks! There's a difference." They could take the other stairs back if the night hadn't ended by then.
"Whatever," he muttered, checking to make sure he hadn't lost anything in the mad dash over. Everything seemed to be in place. "Let's go." And he wasn't upset over losing, either. It hadn't been a real race. Not really.
