Day 30: Men's Showers (Third Shift)

Feb 17, 2008 23:46

The lockdown had been interesting. The fact that the staff had enough power to put down a rebellion that quickly and then lock people into their rooms just as fast was something of a feat to be admired. Their efficiency would have been much more impressive if Okita had been on the other side of it, however. As it stood, he had to keep his ( Read more... )

[Waiting for Captain Jack :D ]

Kenren sighed and stretched when the nurses came to escort them to the showers. Who the hell needed an escort to the showers? The controls set upon them were grating on him more and more. At least he wasn't one of the ones stuck with the orderlies breathing down their necks. It wasn't like they were even attractive. because he wouldn't have minded so much then.

He grabbed a shower and leaned back against the wall, letting the spray wash away the dirt and grit of the last few nights.

[sorry for the delay!]

Captain Jack was rather bemused by the whole riot thing he'd missed; he chatted happily to the orderlies as they headed to the showers, trying to get them to gossip a bit about it. No dice. They must have gotten a serious ass-chewing or something over it.

He did a quick look-around when he got to the shower room and immediately spotted Kenren, who he'd passed such a pleasant night with recently. He shucked off his clothes and sauntered over, giving the man a cheerful smile. "Good morning," he said, taking the shower next to him, and letting his gaze linger appreciatively as he did so.

Kenren opened one eye a crack when someone approached and he grinned when he recognised that voice. He took his time looking Jack over from head to foot, enjoying the sight immensely. He'd enjoy it more if they weren't in a crowded shower with orderlies looking them over, but he'd take what he could get.

"Morning," he replied. "I see you escaped the chaos."

Jack grinned. "Who ever thought that being a lazy bastard would have benefits?" he said. "I overslept, of all things. Not that I would've jumped in on a riot anyway." He smirked. "Well, not unless someone cute needed some rescuing."

He turned his shower on and stepped beneath it, enjoying the feeling of both warm water and being appreciated. "I'm guessing that you stayed out of it too, since you seem rather un-drugged?" That was really for the best, in his opinion. Maybe a riot could have swung things, but it sounded like a poorly-planned waste of time.

Kenren chuckled softly and nodded. "Well, you might have had to. Seemed like there were a few fairly cute people involved who could've done with rescuing." There were lots of very attractive people here, after all.

He flashed Jack a grin. "Normally I'd've been on it in a second, but the repurcussions here are a bit more annoying that just getting the crap beaten out of me. If it was going to do any good, it would've been a different matter." Riots were great in his opinion, but they needed to be all or nothing.

"Oh, well in that case..." Jack chuckled. "Probably best that I wasn't around, then. I've managed to escape the happy shots so far, and I'd like to keep it that way. I don't really need any help to maintain a good mood."

He sighed. "Still, I'm kind of sad I missed breakfast. I'm a little... hungry." Because it was practically a law that such a comment couldn't just be left alone, he gave Kenren another sly smile. "I don't know... from what you saw, would another riot be worth it if it were actually organized, or are they too well prepared?"

That was a point of curiosity. He didn't have any problems jumping in to the fray if it would do some good. But he really doubted these people would have such a large group around if they didn't have a way to control them all in case of mutiny.

"Somehow," Kenren replied dryly, "I kinda' doubt the 'happy shots' actually suit their name." Everyone seemed pretty damn miserable when it came to them in fact.

Kenren snorted in amusement, returning the smile. "You strike me as someone who's always hungry. Not that I'm objecting or anything." And then it was back to business, Kenren thinking it over for a moment before responding. "There were a lot of nurses and orderlies, more than I've seen just walking around here, so they have reinforcements in easy reach. If it was just sedation with needles that was the problem, I'd say organisation and getting everyone in it would work, but there was something odd about it... Once the extra nurses arrived, some of the rioters became unconcious without even being touched. If that can happen to anyone, then I don't doubt they could do it again." Which was the worrying thing. The nurses were much stronger during the night, but you could at least fight them without getting knocked out like that.

Jack laughed. "Well, maybe. Though I've noticed that most of the people around here suffer from an eternally crappy attitude." Yes, they were prisoners, and yes, it stank, but it could be a lot worse. And it was always better to face a possible execution with a smile, he'd found. Even imprisonment and death weren't so bad if you greeted them with a song in your heart.

...and preferably a gun in each hand, but a guy couldn't always get what he wished for.

"I have been known to have an... appetite," he said, giving Kenren a wink. He sobered, though, at the description the man gave regarding the end of the riot. "Sounds like mass mind control," he said. "Or they've implanted us all with some kind of automatic shut-down chip. That's... lame."

"Well, they kinda' do have good reason. But hey, at least this place isn't boring. They'd really be miserable then." Like if they really were locked into their rooms at night, if the dayshift charade was all that there was.

"Well, we'll just have to make sure you're kept sated then," Kenren replied with a soft laugh. Hey, everyone needed some stress relief sometimes.

"It didn't look like mind control. They just collapsed, rather than stopping fighting. But it did target only those being aggressive. I'd say lame was kind of an understatement."

"Bah," Jack said. "We're all dealing with the same stuff, and neither you nor I are dark clouds of brooding." He winked at Kenren. The man did have a good point, though. Jack had to admit that he might think of this as less of an interesting little diversion if he was capable of dying.

He leaned a little closer, though not enough to draw undue attention. "Actually, I was wondering if you've been keeping yourself busy," he said. He did actually want to accomplish something this night; it shouldn't all be fun and games, after all. But one day of work should be followed by a day of fun if it was available.

Now that was interesting... selective targeting rather than some kind of blanket field. "Sounds more and more like an implanted control. Which would be run by a computer..." he murmured, considering the options. Unfortunately, there was a lot of technology out there like that, so it didn't help that much.

"Hey, this is practically a holiday for me. Interesting people, good fights to be had. Damn near perfect if it weren't actually a prison where they tortured people. And Definitely better than where I was before." And if Hakkai hadn't disappeared and if Tenpou had been there and huh... he wondered what Tenpou would have made of Hakkai, or what Hakkai would have thought of Tenpou. It was an odd thought. Okay, there could be improvement. Like he could not keep remembering things that hadn't happened for him yet.

He nodded in reponse. "I've been managing to keep myself occupied. Maybe not quite as much as I'd like, but I've managed to do a few things." Like get hold of a sword. Now he just needed a chance to use it.

"A computer?" He asked with a frown. The word might have been one that he'd heard before, but he couldn't be sure. If it was technology, then it was more Tenpou's realm of experience, not his.

Jack laughed. "I feel much the same, my friend. I've been in much worse prisons than this. And considering what I was doing before I got here, this is pretty much the first vacation I've had in a couple decades." Though vacation was a relative thing, as far as Jack was concerned. He did what he enjoyed, so normally breaks simply weren't necessary. "So now I'm curious. What were you doing before you got here?"

He gave Kenren a sly smile. "Think you'll be busy tomorrow night or the next?"

It was still interesting, how many people here were from a time with primitive technology. He wondered what that meant, and why their captors were taking people from such a wide range of times. "It's a device. What computers can do kind of depends on what time period we're talking about. Runs the whole spectrum between glorified abacus and intelligent, thinking being with the equivalent of emotions."

Kenren shrugged. "Nothing too special. Leading a small rebellion against the Heavens mainly," he replied with a faint smirk. "Breaking a few heavenly edicts. I mean, we all got killed and sentenced to eternal reincarnation in the lower world, but at least that has to be more interesting than the Heavens were."

As long as he didn't think about the specifics of being someone else, then he was fine with it. At least they all seemed to end up together.

"I'm sure I can find time in my hectic schedule if you've got something in mind," he said with a grin. Especially if it was as enjoyable as last time.

"Huh..." So that's what a computer was, at least, in the most basic of terms. "I think I've seen some before, but I was kinda' distracted by the cloned heretical beasts that were trying to kill me at the time."

"Oooh, that sounds fun," Jack said. "I like a little revolution now and again. Rules were meant to be broken and all." He took the reincarnation thing in stride. Everyone had their own little religious thing. He'd yet to be convinced that any of it was real, from what he'd seen.

He smiled. "I just may come looking, then," he said, winking at the man. Of his encounters thus far, Kenren had been the most fun. He liked a guy that was interested in just having a good time without getting serious about it. There was too much serious going around here.

"Heretical beasts?" he asked, curious. "What is it about them that makes it heretical?" Maybe it was the cloning. "But yes, well, that's certainly a good reason to not have gotten a good look in." He grinned. "Happens to me all the time, too."

"Yeah, exactly. Although using the rules against someone is also very entertaining on occasion." Like when you pushed them right to the edge and there wasn't a damn thing they could do about it because hey, you hadn't technically done anything wrong. "I just didn't expect to end up here meeting a couple of people that my friends were reincarnated as. It's kinda' awkward." Not to mention confusing and painful ( ... )

Jack nodded. He'd done similar things, himself, and it brought him no end of entertainment. "Yeah, I can imagine," he said. And he could. Not because he'd met reincarnated people; more because skipping through time meant that you sometimes met the same people in ways that you didn't necessarily want to. Or there was the whole not getting older thing, while the people around him that he'd ceaselessly shagged in their youth eventually turned into great-grandparents, if they lived that long. It was a bit sad if he wanted to think about it ( ... )
