Nightshift 27: M33

[from out here]The conversation with Sousuke had gone a lot easier tonight. If Usopp's roommate was really so insecure, it made things simpler for Usopp, although he didn't feel entirely comfortable with the idea of trying to bully Sousuke into agreeing that Usopp's behavior was normal and that Sousuke was the one who had a problem, should Sousuke ( Read more... )

Usopp was soon on the receiving end of the closest thing to a baffled expression you were liable to get from Sai. All that had sort of come out at once, and the ninja still wasn't used to dealing with someone so... chattery.

He hadn't expected there to be anyone else joining them for the evening, but he supposed the more people there were, the more they could get accomplished. it didn't hurt to know a few other faces in this place either. He found himself mildy curious as to what other sorts Usopp even hung out with.

But he found himself a bit stuck on "...Origami? I don't have much experience with it. Why?"

"Don't worry, it's not complicated." Usopp reassured Sai as he had Sousuke. "I worked out a set of folds for paper. If you mix the flour and some chili powder, and fold them into the paper, then throw the paper hard enough, it's like a little smoke bomb." He was clearly proud of himself--well, it had taken a bit of experimentation to get it just right. "I thought we could make a few of those tonight, along with the metal weapons."

The map he was working on was finished. He tore the new copy out of his notebook and neatly put it to the side on his desk. At this rate, he was going to run out of paper...

Sai raised both eyebrows slightly. Having wondered what the pirate had in mind for the flower and chili powder for a while, he found the actual reason somewhat interesting. Definitely imaginative, this one. It wouldn't be nearly as effective as a real smoke bomb, but they would certainly do in a pinch - and that's what they were all in as long as they were here.

"You have the soldering iron?" he asked as Usopp mentioned the metal. He didn't see why the man wouldn't, but it would be good to check first thing on the chance that he would have to make a run to someone else's room.

"Yes," Usopp answered, a little quieter. He turned to Sai, holding the flashlight in his lap, and began to demonstrate how he was making the quick-popping paper 'bombs.' "I thought I should hold off on anything that requires it at least until the first visitor that I know is coming has passed. Then I'll close the door and pull it out. I don't want anyone to see it's in here, to be honest, even if there's still plenty of people who know we have it..."

Working alongside Sai at least had the safety measure of someone who could fight being in the room. If he were working alone, there'd be little to stop some of the more terrifying patients from just coming in and grabbing the thing. Not that he wouldn't put up a fight...
