Night 57: East Hall

[from here]Behind the door was another hallway -- that made sense, since they were right below the main hall of the first floor, or very, very close. Taura jogged down it, to the far end ( Read more... )

There was a look of surprise on Rita's face when Taura produced the magic stone and used it on her, but it soon passed. It made sense to test the spell now, rather than risk having it fail at a critical moment. When the spell was done, she brought the finger to her mouth and sucked the blood off the tip. When she pulled it away, she saw that the skin beneath was completely healed. Good as new.

"Fine by me," she said in response to Taura's plan, though her attention was mostly on the gruesome images that lined the grim-looking hallway. What were those supposed to be? A war record?

Having been well-practiced in the art of ignoring brats, Rita didn't react to Goku's first question about the stone, but his second one got her to turn her head sharply. "You'll just break it," she snapped. Though she couldn't say for sure how fragile the stone was, it was certainly at risk in that kid's grubby hands.

"Come to think of it, though," she began, her expression turning neutral once again, "Did you ever hear anything about what that stone's called, or where it actually came from?" Knowing those things would allow her research to progress even if she didn't have the stone in her possession... though it could be a long shot. "In any case, if the stone doesn't have a name, I can give it one."

"Look? Yeah." Taura held up the small stone, which caught what little light was down there and bent it into tiny green spots on the walls. "Zack called it a materia, and it comes from his home. His and Cissnei's." Taura looked at the stone, her face suddenly serious. "She was my roommate." Past tense explained the seriousness. "We ended up on her home planet the night the doors turned into wormholes, but she didn't come back. Just this."

Taura didn't know if Cissnei'd had the stone before that night; she liked to think maybe she'd sent it back, since she hadn't been able to keep her promise to send a rescue team. At least not yet.

Until then, they'd have to make their own luck.
