Instead of a jingle, the intercom simply clicked, filling the rooms with quiet feedback. The Institute appeared to come its usual after dinner lull, where most likely waited with bated breath for the signal to start the night. The military seemed to place importance on concise transitions, and perhaps it would continue as it had the previous night and lack any rough starts.
It was a sentiment quickly marred by the feeling of scrutiny. There was no doubt, then--at least to anyone familiar with the military--as to the identity of the speaker this round.
"Good evening."
The Eagle paused intently and only for a moment, allowing his presence and greeting to sink into the minds of his listeners.
"I've been led to understand that Dr. Landel made it customary at this time to bid you all a good night and a sound sleep," he continued. "'I'm sure we're all ready to tuck in,' mm? 'I hope you all get a good night's rest.'" The General proceeded to read off various nightly farewells given by the (previous) Head Doctor, the former's tone indicating dwindling care.
After a minute, he stopped. Shuffling of papers could be heard in the background. For a brief instant, it sounded as though the man was finished with his address, and his listeners were free for the evening. The intercom even clicked off, forcing silence in its place...
