Night 56: M91-100 Hallway

Dinner came and went without much fuss, probably because his roommate thought he was being courteous for sleeping through the entire thing. Yet this was one night where Sync needed his company awake more than anything, especially given what he had planned later on that evening. But before he could do the honor of shoving Nigredo off his bed, the ( Read more... )

After sticking his note on that bulletin board, Dick Gumshoe had walked away a defeated man.

If he had to be honest, he thought he'd probably known the truth all along, but fighting it off with all his heart was the only way he could handle it. He wasn't ready to admit it to anyone, but he knew that feeling deep down in his gut too well. That was the feeling he always got when he suddenly wasn't sure if he was right, before he started doubting everything he'd believed until eventually, it became impossible to deny that he was wrong.

What if Ms. von Karma was right? It went against everything he knew about his partner, but after today's trip, his self-esteem couldn't sink much lower. While it just didn't feel right to give up on the idea entirely, he mentally hated himself for putting that much faith in his own lousy opinion.

Dinner passed in silence the same as last night. He stewed in his own anger and misery at not being able to do anything. Maybe the pressure had finally gotten to Mr. Edgeworth. If he had to guess, Gumshoe would say it was all because of that "sleep study"! As a man who got easily ruffled by any mention of the supernatural, the detective could only imagine how he must have felt, hearing that voice all the time. And it hadn't been just any voice; it'd been the voice belonging to his dad! (He'd been so brave to tell him about that...)

But it didn't matter if Miles Edgeworth went by a different name now. He... He was still Miles Edgeworth, and Dr. Landel... the General would have to do better if he wanted to make Gumshoe forget that! I'm gonna find him. I'm gonna find him and make him see that he isn't just a nobody! That he's a man worth remembering!!

The lights went out, the doors unlocked, and Gumshoe flicked on his flashlight and got to his feet, feeling like a new man. It'd take more than an ominous silence to throw him off his game tonight. "Well? Are you gonna say something or what?" he said to the intercom, shooting a hard look back at it before making his exit.
