And ... the stairs. Bella couldn't help but peek up at the darkness as she moved slowly up the stairs, saving all of her energy for when she reached the second floor. She didn't want to leap up the stairs and have to catch her breath without even having done anything. That would have sucked.
Do not want to fall up the stairs, she

The stairs were completely abandoned and so quiet that it set Peter on edge. He'd never been attacked in this area, but he could never completely discount the possibility, either. It was tiring to always be alert and waiting for something to attack, but he couldn't approach the nights here any other way.
Still, now was probably the time to start to get to know these two kids, even if working with people so young was still bizarre to him. He glanced back at both Ritsuka and Albedo (their names were just as odd as their appearances, but he left it alone).
"So it sounds like both of you have been here for a while." He looked Albedo over in particular. "Are you going to help out Search and Rescue too?"

"Over a month," Ritsuka said, moving up after Peter as they ascended the stairs. A month was a long time in a place where people sometimes didn't stay for more than a week or a few days, but it was still such a short time in the grand scheme of things. "I would, but..." He trailed off, frowning slightly. He was still against the idea of the clubs in general, especially after going up and seeing what had happened that one night when no one came to rescue the taken. Ritsuka's anger had cooled, but the sense of wrong had not. "I guess I prefer to ( ... )

No, it wasn't something to think about. Not now, not with strangers or friends, and not like this. His mind shifted, moved, rolling with contradictions from the actions of both siblings. But he couldn't think of that. Of them. Because if he did, his thoughts would surely shift to one he hadn't seen for a time. One that had played with them, laughed, fought, scuffled, abandoned, betrayed. Hated.
Hated. Hated hated hated. Which shouldn't affect Albedo. Because he was to hate his twin. That was what he resolved on when that happened. Nothing had changed, but the decision which should be simpler. He would hate him, destroy them--
But he couldn't hate Nigredo. And he had promised not to hurt him. Contradictions. In both Albedo's thoughts, and Rubedo's actions.

On a more positive note, his frayed nerves was enough to distract from his usual hesitance of going up this stairwell. All it received as he hurriedly stomped his way up each step was an unhappy glare, as if challenging those in charge to stop him here again. He was the leader of the Assassin's Guild. He was hand-chosen by Zato-1 himself to be in high authority of one of the most powerful organizations on the planet. He'd survived two weeks of this hell and he was not about to lose now. He did not, nor would he ever, care about these damn stairs.
Halfway through this self-reassurance came a noise however, loud enough for him to pause and pry his narrowed eyes from the floor toward the hallway above. Someone was shouting...?
"OUTTA MY FACE!"There was a fight upstairs--one he did not want to get involved in. With those shouts came powerful, resonating energy... If he couldn't use his magic here, it was likely any match with someone like that would be unfavorable. Even still, he was not about to turn around. He would just ( ... )

This particular flight of stairs didn't exactly have the happiest memories for the battle android. It was the same journey to terrible halls, painful battles and flare ups from the drug in his back. With each step Sechs could feel the cold prickle inside his spine, the heartless presence in the back of his mind, coiling and sneering as it seemed ready to pounce--
Halfway up the staircase and already Sechs felt cornered. He wished badly for his own flashlight, expecting both physical and mental monsters to appear. Yet with those two concerns came the burden of relying on Kibitoshin's flashlight and welfare. Sechs may have fought in Alita's team back at the Z.O.T.T, but he didn't have the patience to be a team member...
Sechs was nearing the door to the second floor; Kibitoshin had better not ruin his progress by falling down the stairs or something...

Standing in the doorway, Sechs carefully stretched his neck out into the hallway, his eyes focusing hard into the darkness. He was really wishing he had his own flashlight then, as his body began reacting to the painful memories of the second floor. The worst things that have ever happened to him in the institute took place in these halls. The Replica's heartbeat hastened with excitement and dread, his skin began to perspire and his spine slowly frosted up inside. The fear was worsening Sechs' already bad mood, and having Kibitoshin suddenly wave the flashlight about from behind didn't help either.
Aggravated, Sechs turned on Kibitoshin with a snarl. "Watch where you swing that thing! Geeze!" he growled, blinking against the erratic light. "I said keep it steady! We gotta look out for monsters, not attract them with all that flashing ( ... )

Okita wasted no time in beginning the ascent to the second floor. He was nervous about tonight in a way he hadn't been in a long time. The strange events of the day, the loss of Landel, the military coup, the sudden disappearance of Zevran; everything boded ill for them and Okita just hoped tonight would not turn out to be like the last time they went upstairs. If there were nurses still around and they released that gas again, his lungs wouldn't be able to take it and Hijikata would be forced to face a truth Okita still hoped to save him from.
And Asuka... Asuka needed protecting. She also needed a strong leader and someone who collapsed in battle did not fit the bill. If he wanted to keep the club together, he would have to keep face for just a little bit longer. Until Hijikata was informed enough that he could begin to take over if he wished to. "Upstairs and to the right there is a door. This is a secret of our group, Asuka-san. I hope you understand that you cannot tell anyone about it."

The Scarecrow slid past Detective Gumshoe and started up the stairs, keeping his flashlight pointed ahead of him and his free hand on the rail. A stumble on the steps wouldn't feel at all well, and he wanted to keep in as good a condition as possible should they come across a witch and have to run for it.
Oh, now there was an interesting thought! "You must be either new or very fortunate to not know much about the second floor," he said over his shoulder. "You do know what goes on up there, don't you? With the Sleep Studies?" The last note was quieter, as though saying the name of the event would bring it back to him somehow. Of his many new experiences with being human, that was one he'd hoped he could forget someday; however, even the mention of it made him nervous, sending that tingling down his back. It got better each time, but he had a feeling it'd never go away entirely.
