Title: Choices (2/?) Safe
Author:
damn_hero_zoe
Rating: PG
Pairing: Zoe/Jayne
Spoilers: Post-BDM
Warning:  Um, it's kinda fluffy...
A/N: This is unbetaed (if anyone wants to be a Zayne beta, let me know), so bear with me. The characters are not mine and neither are the lyrics.   It was partly inspired by this icon by
angelite.

Zoe walked into the galley and saw Jayne sitting on one of the soft chairs in the sitting area. He looked up at her as she came in, putting the book down he was reading. She slid down on the couch next to him, fingers running up his arm to his shoulder.

"You okay?" she asked softly. He seemed distracted to her. They had just finished a job that had gone surprisingly well. He pulled her closer to him, hugging her, burying his face in her soft hair. So everything wasn't okay. She wrapped her arms around him. "What is it, Jayne?"

He took a deep breath and pulled back enough to look into her eyes as he pulled her into his lap. "What are we doing, Zo? Been two weeks since I told ya how I felt. Wha' is this dance we've been doin'?"

"What do you want it to be?"

"Zo', ya know what I wanna do with ya. But how far ya willin' ta go with me?"

"The end of the 'verse and back." He had to smile softly at that.

"Ain't wha' I meant, bao bei."

"I know." Her fingers caressed his cheek and he leaned into her touch, purring. "I'm still trying to figure everything out."

"Still making choices?"

"Made my choice. Just trying to sort everything else out."

"And wha choice did ya make?"

She leaned in and kissed him, lips firm against his. Her hand slid up his arm to his neck, pulling his lips to hers, keeping them against hers. There was need in that kiss, but there was something else. Jayne hesitated for all of a moment before his hand slipped into her hair. He pulled back.

"Zoe, I need tha in words. I dun wanna muck up what eva it is we got going."

Zoe smiled softly. "Jayne, I know that I feel something strong for you. I just…” She trailed off, unsure of what to say.

He kissed her gently. “Still need time?”

“Need to take it slow is all.” Her eyes told him that she was still fragile. Zoë wasn’t one to get overly emotional, but when she felt something, she felt it with her whole heart. Here she was, already a widow and yet, Jayne had a place in her heart.

“Iffen tha’s wha ya want, darlin’, we can take it slow.” She smiled as she laid her head on his shoulder. His arms tightened around her, pulling her close. A gentle hand petted her hair, causing her to sigh softly, contentedly. His lips lingered near her temple, whispering soft words, words Zoë didn’t know he was capable of saying.

A few nights later, Zoë was just finishing checking the cargo in the hold before they landed the next morning. Jayne came down the stairs and she looked up at him, smiling. He was holding his guitar.

“Whatcha got there?” she asked with a smirk.

His free arm slid around her shoulders and he led her towards the couch by the infirmary. “Jus sumthin the Shepherd gave me a while ago. Thought I could play fer ya.”

Her face was radiant. “I love it.” They sat on the couch, Zoë curled up next to him and he began to strum. Had to tune it a little, but she still smiled.

“Hope ya dun mind none. Learned a song fer ya.” Her eyes lit up as he began to play “Heard it on tha Cortex. Thought a ya.”

And softly, he began to sing.

Sitting solemnly at home
Beside a silent telephone
A vacant heart, a world come and gone
So hold me in and I could see
A cold romantic one-way street
An empty bed of used up promises
And then you came to me
With conscious hands and steady feet
You took away my need to need
My history
And boy, well here goes nothing

And she sat there, with tears in her eyes, as he played. She couldn’t believe that someone would want to do something like this for her. It was too sweet. Her head rested on his shoulder as he continued and she closed her eyes, letting the music wash over her.

But this is not a love song
It couldn't be that I could fall for you so soon,
My rose that blooms in autumn,
So go on,
Break me, take me
To the place I'd want to be
And we can just pretend it wasn't all a dream
All a dream...

He looked over at her face, blissful and more beautiful than he’d seen it. He smiled softly and kissed her forehead as he continued.

At times it comes and goes again
An empire founded on a whim
And is it less important if we were young
In years will I look back and miss
The way that we made all of this
A sanctuary I would never trade for anything
And there you were again
To show me just how I fit in
This incandescent second skin
You've wrapped around me, time and time again
And so it goes

As he sang the chorus again, Zoë thought about everything that was on her mind. She knew he protected her, cared for her. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have bothered to learn this song for her. In her mind, Zoë knew that she loved him. It was just something that she knew instinctively. When Zoë loved, it was with her whole heart.

Jayne shifted slightly to look at her while he sang, relishing in the loved and adoration in her eyes. He never thought he’d see anyone look at him the way she was looking at him right then.

There's lifetimes inside of your eyes
It's been a long while since I woke up alive
And hell, I know there's times when troubles don't die
But I can try...
And could we try...

He went into the chorus once more and she kissed his cheek. This moment was perfect to her. There was nothing but the two of them and the soft strumming of his guitar.

Come so close to me that I can feel you thinking...

As he strummed the guitar one last time, Zoë took it from him and placed it on the couch next to her. She slid into his lap and kissed him sweetly. He pulled back after a moment and looked at her.

“Didn’t do tha to get ya in bed wit me, Zo’.”

She laughed softly. “I know you didn’t, Jayne.” She snuggled close to him, head on his chest, listening to his heart beat. He smiled and kissed her head again.

“Juss wanted ta make sure ya knew.” She was humming the song softly, mostly to herself. It made Jayne smile, almost puff up with pride. He could be sweet and romantic, same as he could be tough and crude. She fell asleep in his arms, feeling safer than she had in a long while.
