I got on an airplane to fly to Great Lakes Recruit Training Center. After a bunch of weeks of more or less misery, I graduated from boot camp. Since I didn't have any friends or relatives coming, I volunteered for parking duty instead of standing in formation for the ceremony. So instead of standing on hard asphalt parade ground in the hot sun for hours, I stood out in a dusty field, in the shade of a handy tree, directing the visitors driving by to the parking area. I thought I got the better deal, not being a big fan of ceremonies.
After boot camp, Hospital Corps School, and then off to my short career in the navy. In retrospect, I should have stayed in the navy for longer. I'd now have retirement pay forever, and full boat VA medical care. Oh well. 20/20 hindsight.
