I was surfing around on eBay and saw a photo that I liked. It was a group photo of 19th century or early 20th century missionaries, and the people's names are inked in the margin. Unfortunately, the dealer didn't transcribe the names in the auction, and the scan was too small to be able to read them directly from the image. So, I sent the guy some email:
"I can't read the writing under the photo. Can you tell me the names written there?"
His reply:
"Good morning they are names of the people in the photo."
Brilliant, mister. As if I hadn't already figured that out.
It's especially annoying, because I had just bought something from the guy last week, and it was in my mailbox today. And I've bought from him in the past. Is this how you court a returning customer? I know he sells a lot of stuff (over 140,000 listings active right now), and he doesn't type in detailed descriptions on each listing. He probably doesn't have the time to deal with detailed questions from everyone who asks, but still! I've bought from the guy! Would it kill him to scan it larger, and just send me a photo, if he doesn't want to actually type the names?
Grumble. I think I'd rather he ignored me that treat me like an idiot.
