I've always disliked this switchplate cover in my bedroom. My bedroom is in shades of light green, so it never seemed to color coordinate well with everything else. So I decided that I'd decoupage and do a little decorating to give myself a new one.
I took a piece of handmade paper and used a strong adhesive to adhere it to a plain switchplate cover (not the carved ornate one that was in the first photo). I used Mod Podge to seal it so that it won't pick up skin oils when the switch is used. Then I used the adhesive to glue down bits of an ornamental paper underneath some Van Gogh mosaic tile, and some gold skeleton leaves. I used Mod Podge over the skeleton leaves to give them protection from skin oils too.
It turned out pretty well! Now I need to replace the one in my computer room next, I think. I'll need to think about what to do with that one. Maybe a vintage photo collage or something like that ...
