Hawaii Volcanoes in National Geographic

Oct 20, 2004 13:05

National Geographic has a photo essay on the Hawaii Vocanoes National Park in the October 2004 issue. For those unacquainted with the power and drama of eruptions and the stark harsh landscapes resulting from the eruptions of shield volcanoes, this article shows what God is doing with His creation. In February 1972 while in Hawaii I saw a lava lake with a "waterfall" and fountain at the location of which by February 1974 had became a cone known as Mauna Ulu (literally: Growing Mountain); at that time I witnessed small lava flows breaking out near the top of the cone and flowing down the sides. My family camped overnight in a parking lot along the then blocked by lava, Chain of Craters road and had to leave during the middle of the night because the wind had shifted and was carrying the smoke from Mauna Ulu to where we were camped. I've also stood on top of a 2 month old A'a lava flow (from Sept. 1977 East Rift zone eruption) that was still hot enough that you could feel the heat through your boots from it's still cooling interior.

If one doesn't subscribe (I don't - I can't put up with their editorial philosophy - I saw the article at a dentist's office) it is probably available at your local library, or dentist's office ;-)
