Ted Kennedy has left us.
This is a great loss for Massachusetts, and also for the United States. There went the man who was probably the most powerful person in Washington. While conservatives rejoice at the removal of this stumbling block, Kennedy will be mourned by all who believe in human rights, health care for all, safety at home and in the streets, world peace, and equal treatment for all under the law. In short, anyone who truly espouses the American way will find it more difficult to hold our country to that ideal.
To his detractors, I admit it is true that all three Kennedy brothers certainly had their sins (who of us does not?), but that all three truly loved their country and worked for the good of all, especially of those who had not been "to the manor born".
Some of our presidents and other public figures have been guilty of far worse sins than those of any Kennedy -- unjustified wars, taking away some of the little bit possessed by the poor, etc. God will judge all of them, too.
To his detractors I say, "Judge not that YOU be not judged".
40+ years of punishment is a long sentence. I know what it is like to try to live something down.
During his period of public service, Ted Kennedy has more than made amends for the sins of his past life. Those of us who are better off because of his tenure in the Senate will mourn him deeply.
