There was no choice as far as Auron was concerned. There were promises left for him to keep.

He'd been waiting for this moment since he had arrived, but he hadn't expected this world to leave as much of a mark on him as they had. He had made and lost a friend. He had fought with a skilled comrade in battle. He had met a young girl with boundless energy, a strange obsession with him, and yet, a good heart.

The unsent laughed quietly, humorlessly. There was nothing to be done for it.

Except...

The guardian's hand went to his waist, unclasping the jug at his side. He raised it, not too high, and took a short drink.

For the fallen.

Naturally, Maya didn't ask before she came up behind Auron and threw her arms around him.

"Mr. Auron!" she said brightly, though there were tears welling up in her eyes and it was a little obvious in her voice. "I'm really glad you're okay! Then again, of course you'd be okay, you're pretty much the coolest guy here and probably the best fighter... so I really wasn't worried at all. But I'm glad you're okay anyway!"

Auron stiffened at the sudden hug. He should have expected her to show up. He supposed it would have felt... strange if she didn't.

"You give me too much credit," he replied, though there was the barest hint of a smirk on his face.

"Nah," she replied. "I remember when you saved my life all those times. You're definitely the coolest guy here, even though I know I'll never get you to say so."

Maya's tears were becoming a little more obvious now. "You're going back to your home, aren't you, Mr. Auron?" she asked. "So am I. So I can see my sister again. But if it weren't for you I wouldn't even be here to be going home, so..."

A tear rolled down her face, though she smiled. "Thank you for everything, Mr. Auron. And don't worry, your secret's still safe with me."

He looked away from the girl, instead staring straight ahead, his eyes hidden behind the dark sunglasses on his face. "Every story must come to an end," he explained. "I have yet to complete the end. And there is one whose story is only beginning."

Auron looked at her once more, his expression serious yet somehow gentle. "As is yours. Do with it as you will."

After a moment, another smirk appeared. "Try not to call too many favors."

He was right. This story was coming to an end, but the big story was just beginning. Maya had a lot to do when she got back to L.A.. She had to become the Master of Kurain, and she had to help Nick with his law firm and watch out for Pearly. And she had to be Mia's maid of honor and help her plan all that wedding stuff... oh, so much to do.

Then he made a comment about favors. Maya's eyes brightened immediately, and she grinned through her tears. She sniffled loudly and wiped her face. "Haha, I won't. I'll save it for a real emergency!"

Sado moved to stand by Auron's side, but for a very long time he said nothing. There were no words for the moment, none that fit it anyway.

Well, no words except, "It was an honor to fight at your side."

Auron noticed Sado step up beside him but allowed the silence to linger. If he had something to say, he would say it in time.

"As with you."

Holding up his hand, he murmured, "I hope your next chapter is a little more peaceful."

Auron's only response at first was a short, cynical grunt. The journey had yet to begin, and from what he knew now, he could tell it would be anything but. "You'd have better luck with your own."
