Once securing the apartment at One Irving Place, made sure Eve was safe and looked after, Aya was out and about again. Eve would be safe. Aya always made sure of that. Eve would be looked after. Eve would be tucked in at night. Eve would be happy and snug and there won’t be a care in the world for her in this horrible, awful place.

Even though doing so in the middle of the streets may not have been wise, Aya paused. Her mind clouded with a haze of confusion as she couldn’t... wouldn’t... She didn’t want to think of all the horrible things that had happened that long night.

Things that had started to go so well. Eve was happy. They were going to go to the museum that weekend, together for the first time in weeks since Eve had started college. They were going to have lunch first thing. Greek food. Aya’s favorite. Chat. Help her with a few subjects she had been having the most trouble with in school, but not allow that to get in the way when they went to Carnegie Hall before...

Her thoughts were strained by the sound of movements from one of the higher stories of a building. Aya turned and looked up.

Just then, the movement made itself known: One of those creepy-crawlies that populated the city, making up for the lost inhabitance, rummaged from one of the upper rooms of an apartment. Aya stood there, watching for a time, almost studying the creature and its movements. The shuttering of its little feet, shifting from inside the building. Its legs poked and scratched at the glass, tapping as if trying to summon attention.

There were no screams, so whatever vicinity it had decided to raid, it had nothing to concern Aya. Still, it didn’t hurt to get a little sparring out of her if one of their little friends decided to get too close. She didn’t trust the streets of this city enough not to ever leave without a gun and her club.

Aya had dealt with monsters before. Had neutralized threats no different from them. When it came to dealing with the parasites, they weren’t that much different from NMCs. Handling them had become almost too easy for her, having hunted so many of their kind in the past. Their branch had earned a reputation among the force as “monster hunters”, but... that was eight years ago. It had been a part of Aya that remained dormant until these recent few months, when the need to bring about that side of her again became a necessity for survival.

Hand over the club at her belt, Aya proceeded down the street, fingers clenched over her weapon. A piece of her almost anticipated a fight. Yearned for it. Get some of that which had been balled up inside since fleeing the Holland Tunnel a run. That was another whole can of worms altogether.

No encounters. At least, none that hadn’t been conveniently thrown onto her lap; it wasn’t like Aya had gone out here, looking for a fight. She really shouldn’t be. She knew. One Police Plaza was her goal.

The plaza was just around the corner. Aya sighed, releasing her hold of the club’s handle that hadn’t moved in the while since she had left her apartment. She could have always used an excuse to be late by saying that she had been attacked, and then...

There were priorities, though. Talk to this Zero guy. Meet Carter and update him on the latest going-ons in the city. Work on the bike, possibly get more distributed. Talk about possibly setting up surveillance throughout the city for extra security. (To be honest, the idea of setting up cameras all over struck Aya as too Big Brother, even for her own taste, however... If it would prevent from anyone snatching up Eve in the middle of the night? Aya would take that chance. Somehow, she doubted that there would be many who agreed. It would be best to discuss it with Mark Cohen in person.)

Talking with Zero was a hit or miss decision, she knew that. Getting on the good side of as many people as she could was also important. This would include not inciting a riot stirred by an anarchist, or at least a potential terrorist. At least, those were one of the many words Aya had used to describe that guy. She just thought it would be better to see for herself than to rely on the words of others.

Which was why so much rode on what Aya learned from him. Fill in some more holes in her suspicions. The investigation was a delicate one. It had to be handled properly, accordingly.

As the front doors to One Police Plaza pushed opened, Aya kicked off the snow from her feet. She peeled off her leather jacket, revealing the strap holster that tightened over her shoulders and the Beretta it held; with a small compartment for carrying extra clips on the other side of her chest. The door closed in behind her, inviting a draft into the entrance, and a light breeze that picked up her blonde hair as she moved to walk deeper into the building.
