He wasn't going to go back. Not now. He'd wanted Russel dead when he'd thought he'd lost Roxas again--now, it didn't matter. It certainly wouldn't improve his situation any to kill the kid, satisfying though it would still have been.

No, what was important now was getting away from civilization, particularly Sora or that Dresden freak of nature.

Axel shrugged moodily, inclined to be short himself. "Thought you were gone. Wanted him dead."

This was obviously not a satisfactory answer, because Roxas only glared more, seeming genuinely angry rather than just annoyed that Axel had been about to do something stupid.

"Do you want the whole of Manhattan after you or something? They would've killed you!"

"What the hell would it have mattered?" Axel demanded derisively. "They're after me anyway. Should've known the brat wouldn't keep his mouth shut..."

Aware that nothing he'd said really addressed the point, he walked on, brooding in silence.

Roxas gave an exasperated huff and picked up his pace a little to overtake Axel, glowering at the road in front of him. He, too, was silent for a long time, but he apparently couldn't totally contain his frustration, because eventually he spat out, "What would it have mattered if you died?" He turned to look at Axel, disbelieving, angry, but searching - trying to find a way to understand, and furious that he couldn't. "Seriously?"

Axel had died before, of course. Roxas had watched him fade. And he hadn't understood that, either - he just avoided thinking about it because it meant confronting the fact that it made him upset.

"I've died before," Axel said before with a little snort at the memory, obviously reminiscing along the same lines that Roxas was. "Not like I can be afraid of it. Besides." He walked along a few paces without elaborating, then finally added, "I thought you were gone for good. Wouldn't have been much point in sticking around."

"That ..." Roxas stared Axel for a moment, and then his frown shifted from perplexed to annoyed. "That's stupid - that doesn't even make sense." He looked away, shoulders hunched a little, and added, more sullenly and slightly accusing, "Anyway, I'm not gone."

"Does too," Axel answered stubbornly. "And I didn't know that before I went off to kill the brat. I just...it's fucking stupid, okay? How many times do you expect me to just stand around and watch you disappear? It was nice to have somebody to blame for it this time." Someone who wasn't Sora.

"... Right," Roxas muttered after a long silence, as though it was somehow difficult to say. "Because I love watching you disappear."

Axel made an unintelligible noise under his breath, halfway between a 'hn' and a mutter, and lengthened his stride so that he caught up with Roxas. He seemed to have nothing more to say, walking shoulder-to-shoulder with him in silence, until he abruptly pulled him into a one-armed hug.

Roxas tensed up as soon as Axel touched him - but he had neither the energy nor the inclination to move away or try to shrug him off. After a second or two, he slowly relaxed, until finally, with an exhausted but slightly relieved breath out, he let himself stop being angry for a moment and leaned, just a little, into the hug.

It was awkward, but not terrible. Roxas didn't pull away, at least--even leaned in a little, if he wasn't imagining things. Which was fine, because he didn't particularly want to let go just yet. Now, or when Sora wanted him back.

"Shut up," he said preemptively.

"I didn't say anything," said Roxas. He knew Axel had meant it preemptively, but he hadn't been about to say anything, either. He was still annoyed with Axel for being an idiot, and it still bothered him that he didn't quite understand, and he still hurt inside like only the absence of your heart can hurt - but, although he wasn't about to admit it, he was glad that he'd been able to find Axel and stop him before he went ahead and threw his second chance at living away.

After all, Roxas didn't really fancy his luck at not throwing his own second chance away without something apart and separate from Sora to care about.

"Let's keep it that way," Axel quipped, letting go of him with a tousle of his hair. "We need to keep moving." He glanced back to satisfy himself that no one was following.

"How'd you get away from Sora, anyhow?"

Despite having just permitted a hug of all things, Roxas still ducked away from Axel's hand on his hair. Axel was right, though, they weren't far enough away yet - from Sora, or from potential lynch mobs - so he picked up his pace a little. He was pretty worn out from everything that had happened lately, but he'd find the time to collapse later.

He shrugged in response to Axel's question - more thoughtful than indifferent or evasive. "We ... talked about it. After you knocked him out." Another shrug. "He let me go."
