He just had to come back and see. See if there was anything left. Anything they could salvage before they found a new place to build their lab. There was still the greenhouse atop the Library Hotel, and he could take over the topmost floor easily. The dense web of utilities there would make running the water much easier as well.

All he'd brought with him were some basic tools, gloves, a shovel, sledgehammer, crowbar, and a wheelbarrow. He also carried a box of zip-top bags, as well as some instruments such as forceps and the like. If he came up empty, it wouldn't matter. Anything that may have actually survived would merely be a bonus. He hadn't said anything about where he'd gone when he left Harry's place. If he wasn't there, the people in that house would be safer anyway.

So he walked amongst the debris, gaining a better understanding of why everyone had been so worried about their welfare. It took some doing to get his bearings, without the buildings for landmarks, but he traced a path from the still extant front steps toward the area his lab had been. It was still really soggy from the water tanks. Everywhere there was wasted greenery and fruits and vegetables, not good for anything but nicking the seeds out of. He crouched, picking up a half-smashed tomato. He held it almost lovingly in his hand for a moment, before depositing it into a bag. A light toss got it into the wheelbarrow, before he turned back to the area. Was that one of the water pumps surrounded by all that glass? The more of those he could salvage, the better. He put his leather gloves on before reaching for it. The last thing he wanted was an infection.
