The Overturned Stone Can’t Hide No More... [COMPLETE]

Nov 17, 2008 00:46

Characters: Odd Thomas.
Content: Before leaving with the search party, Odd decides to leave behind words of manly support to a good friend.
Time of day: Early morning.
Warnings: It’s another letter.

It was early enough that Odd, once again, found himself accompanied by only the cool winds of morning. Somehow, without its more repellant occupants, the cathedral seemed quieter... almost lonely.

Which was why he had to do this. It was almost like a mission to him now.

Thankfully, Odd had no regrets about offering Kaylee a room to stay in during his absence. After all that had happened, it was the least he could offer.

The search party would be gathering soon. Odd had told Cheryl to go on ahead, that he would catch up soon as he was finished writing a farewell that, with any luck, wouldn’t be so absolute.

Knowing that his friend was going through a tough time, especially after Odd himself had told Harry that it was okay to lean on others more, he felt it only appropriate to leave behind any friendly support. After all, what kind of friend would he be, heading out without delivering any pearls of encouragement?

Folding the letter, not bothering with a seal or envelope (he had nothing to hide, anyway), Odd tucked the letter underneath Harry’s door. Swinging his coat over his shoulders, Odd left the cathedral into the winter dawn.

Harry,

“A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.”

Now I don’t know particularly what that means, but ironically that quote has been coming to mind these past few days for me. I could probably spend a lifetime trying to figure out Shakespeare and still would have very little idea on what that man meant. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana, if you know what I mean.

That said, hang in there, sir. We’ll be back before you even know it, even if I have to drag the bastard back, kicking and screaming. We’re never going to give up, Harry, or let you down... or desert you. I can promise you that much.

Cheryl asked to come along. Don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on her. Or vise versa. Surprisingly, she’s a lot better with a gun. Well, I mean, it’s not like I’m about to go gung-ho on you all anytime soon. [Strikes are almost illegible in attempts to scrawl them out.] You know, sometimes I wonder if whether or not if it’d be worth getting over that gun phobia of mine.

Nah.

In any case, my mentor always had always instructed me to keep a light tone in my writing, so I am not going to depress you with any dreary babble. “If you don’t keep it light, I’ll sit my four-hundred-pound ass on you, and that’s not the way you want to die.”

I think I almost forgot about that once... Although in all honesty, his ass really doesn’t weigh that much to begin with. The rest of him on the other hand...

Anyway.

Lately I’ve been trying to nurture a little mini garden with some advice. If you could do me a tremendous favor, make sure you take good care of the fruit while I’m gone. After all, you never know when you’re going to need the oranges on the next day of reckoning.

“Now good digestion wait on appetite, And health on both!”

...also Shakespeare.

Eat healthy and hearty, sir, and remember your vegetables. I’ll see you in a couple of days. When I get back, maybe I can teach you how to make a most delicious omelet. But that would require eggs; I’ll need to find some.

Take care,
Odd
