He'd managed to drag himself to the damned hospital in good time. It's not that he wanted to see her, or maybe he did. He just-

Felt the obligation. A half-hearted determination to keep her alive this time, after so many mistakes. Even though he knew.I made you, why are you here? You were here for me but I don't need you anymore, do I? Why are you still following after me? Is this punishment for living? I tried... I tried to end it- but I only ended up here. I'm in hell, isn't that good enough? Maybe it's because of them ( ... )

She didn't really have anyone else, at least not yet.
It wasn't unusual for her to try not thinking about her existence- it was too easy to derail.

She was thinking about him, though, so...close enough.
The need and want was automatic, and beneath it, always, was a layer of resentment that sometimes, bided it times and sometimes, jumped out without warning. Would she even be here, and keeping waking up and coming back again, if he didn't need her, if he didn't need...something?
It's not like she ever had much choice.

Her head perked up a little when she heard distant shouts. She recognized his voice, even faint and muffled. She's always kinda felt like he was hard to miss.
She walked over to the window, and began knocking on it. Hopefully he could hear it, sooner or later...she wasn't exactly in the mood to walk out of the door unarmed and alone, even if it was into the hallway.

Sure enough, the noise eventually reaches his ears. A distant knocking. Faint, but definitely there. He turned, straining to listen to the direction it was coming from. Seemed to be the end of the corridor.

Setting a brisk pace he hurried down the hall towards what he hoped dreaded to be Maria. Usually he was more on his guard than this. More alert. He should have been even more so right now in this foreign place, but he was all too unaware of the skittering approaching behind him. As he approached his destination, he didn't see it until it was too late and there was a hiss and a weight hitting hick back ( ... )

From the inside of the office, suffice to say Maria was somewhat stunned. She didn't have to think much to know the kind of things James was dealing with out there.
She waited until the hall outside was quiet again, and she heard the sound of his voice, this time near and somewhat calmer. The tension and shock that was inside her died down as she headed for the door,

"James, I'm here."

She hesitated for a moment, her hand loosely on the doorknob. Did he even want to...
A small surge of pride rose inside her and she squeezed the handle tightly. She had asked, and he, whether or not he bothered to notice, had the option. He had accepted, said yes.
Could she really be accountable for the fact he couldn't ever bring himself to ever say no?

"and...are you alright?"
