Kairi, too, had settled for strange. She had left a note for her friends that she was going to go make the pancakes for the folk at the Cathedral, and that if she had leftovers, she'd bring them back, cold or not. Kairi doubted anyone in the city could scare her as much as the monster, anyway, or Relena, who was thankfully missing.

Lucky for her, the crabs were away from this part of the city. If the boys found out she went out alone, and then got hurt? Man, she'd probably never live it down. James probably wouldn't either, and that wouldn't be fair.

She held a backpack in one hand, keeping her eyes peeled and ears open, the short (she managed breaking it down at the time, too nervous to tell Riku it was fine, and she was going scouting in Central Park with it and others) halberd secure to her back. And... oh! There he was. She grinned and headed towards the door. No more worry of crabs.

She realized she had yet to actually meet him in person, although it wasn't as though that bothered her or anything. Kairi was always glad to meet new people. She held up the bag and smiled. "Time for some comfort food?"

It was a relief to see the kid had made it safely, though James made a note to see to it that he and his gun walked her home later. Holding the door for her, he nodded, smiling awkwardly. Everything about him was awkward. It was obvious he still wasn't used to dealing with other people.

"Sounds great," He's got a surprisingly soft voice for a man his size, "You didn't run into any trouble on the way here, did you?" He didn't assume she did, but it seemed like a polite thing to ask.

He sort of wished Harry or Odd were here, they were friendlier and a lot less intimidating that he was. Harry was nothing short of mothering, and Odd was just downright likable.

"Nope! I guess the crabs don't like the idea of pancakes," she said jokingly, seeming no way intimidated by James. She had dealt with Cid and Leon back in Traverse Town; they were enough to learn how to deal with the sorts, and Kairi quickly was effected by them very little. James was no different (and at least tried to be social unlike Leon).

She stepped in, although paused because she had... no idea where a kitchen was, and she looked back at him slightly sheepishly.

It took a moment of awkward silence for James to realize that she really didn't know where anything was.

"Oh- OH! Sorry- here, follow me."

Turning, he leads them to a door at the side corner of the large Cathedral, that branches off into a small hallway, eventually leading to what looked like a community center or perhaps a convent would be closer to it. A large house at best (if not a little archaic). At last he pushed open a small door to reveal a rather spotless kitchen.

Harry kept it as such, and on normal occasions, James wasn't allowed to do much in the kitchen.

Not after the noodle incident.

"Well here it is."

Oh, good, he caught on.

With a chuckle to herself, she followed after him, peering into the kitchen. She was glad that it looked clean. She had seen some of the apartments in the Court that, well, needless to say she left pretty quickly at the sight of them. Some of the times she didn't even make it to the kitchen.

"Right!" She got to familiarizing herself with the kitchen, emptying her backpack out on the countertop with the ingredients that she brought. She went right to work once she got things figured out.

"There's no one else here?" she asked, to make idle chatter. Mainly so it wouldn't be more awkward for him. She was fine either way.

For a moment he just stood there, unsure of what to do. Should he help? Or just stay out of her way? Oh! Pans-

They needed pans to make pancakes. Of course- and he should light the stovetop pilot for her- duh.

He moved to the cupboards, retrieving a good sized skillet pan and placing it on the counter.

"Uh, about that- yeah. You'd think they would be huh? Usually this place is so noisy. But well- Odd has been fixing the roof, Harry went on that food run, and uh. Walter is... well he's around but honestly I can never be sure exactly where he is." James admitted, sounding bewildered as he greased the pan with some nonstick spray.

Ok. That was the easy part.

Now, the pilot. He turned the gas on and grabbed the matches, striking one and dropping it onto the vent. Lucky for him it sparked to life instantly.

Hah. Easy. Satisfied with his job, he turned to Kairi again.

"Sorry. Everyone around here kind of tends to do their own thing." It's about then that he smelled smoke.

Looked down.

Oh. His sleeve was on fire. Anyw-

Wait.

"Oh Shhhh-GAH! AH! AH!!!" He turned quickly, trying to pat the flames out with an oven mitt.

((Meep! Sorry~))

Kairi nodded to James' commenting on the others, almost finishing with her work on the batter. More or less. It was looking good enough to her, anyway! "There's nothing wrong with that," she told him. There was no need to apologize, anyway.

Now... just to get -

She sniffed at the air. That... didn't smell right all of a sudden at all. "J -" she turned her eyes to look at him right when he started to yell and her eyes widened, dropping the spoon (where it clattered she didn't know, or care about at that moment). "Oh god! Here um... let me help!"

Although she wasn't sure what would really work. Maybe she should have paid some attention to what Goofy did when he was obviously burning things in the kitchen? Instead of... hiding in her room and ignoring that it was happening...

She grabbed for the spray hose from the sink, turned on the water, and in a panic, sprayed at the flames. Although she just may have sprayed more than just his sleeve. Oops?

He was too busy panicking, trying to swat out the flames to even notice Kairi was coming over with the spray nozzle until we was suddenly being sprayed in the face with cold water.

The fire was out, but James' entire upper-half was soaked, completely.

Water dripping from his nose, and his hair sticking to his face, hanging over his eyes.

He just stood there in shock for a moment.

A long, pregnant silence followed, the both of them just standing there. It was insanely awkward.

"Well," James finally mutters, "Stove's on."

Kairi tried to give him an apologetic stare. Really, tried. And it worked! Mostly, anyway.... mainly because her expression was being broken by small slips of giggles, and finally she had to look away to keep from laughing. "S-Sorry," she got out, honestly. She hadn't meant to miss, of course.

And it was his own fault in the first place for catching his sleeve on fire.

So.

Kairi was still giggling lightly. She found the spoon for the batter on the floor and sighed, picking it up and washing it in the sink after returning the nozzle to where it belonged.

"Maybe it's safer if you stay away from it?" she asked calmly, spoon held in her hand. She couldn't smother the grin on her face. She was ready to finally cook the pancakes, though.

James tried to ignore the fact that she was laughing at him. He was so used to being teased by now, he couldn't begrudge her for it, though he does his bet to not look amused in the least (it's not so bad).

"That's okay. Thanks for putting me out," He turned to ruefully examine the scorch mark left on his jacket, heaving an annoyed sigh.

"M-Maybe you're right," He chuckled nervously, opting to sit this one out, and dry his hair with a washcloth.

Her expression changed to a sheepish one, a bit sorry that she had been giggling at him, and then focused on putting the batter into the pan and cooking up the pancakes. She hummed slightly to herself, unable to help it, and fished around the drawers for a spatula, flipping the pancakes a few times before putting the first ones onto a plate.

She did the same with the rest of the batter until she had a warm plateful of them, smiling warmly yo James. At least he looked a bit more dry now.

"All finished!"
