My Day
My God it's all over. Once a day for five weeks and then everyday for three weeks at Brooke Ave.
I got a mass of hugs and the most adorable cards from the students. I seriously have to scan them in and post them they're just so adorable. One of the boys even gave me a little frangipani flower candle.
My teacher gave me some caramel chocolates and a card too. I know I've said it before but my teacher is seriously the BEST teacher I could have hoped for. My final report was great. I'm really happy with it.
My day has been a mixed bag of emotions though! The first two hours was dancing with stage 1 in the hall and it was just hilarious. I got to dance around, play musical statues and do the YMCA. One of the male student teachers was having a dance-off with the Maori boy Mika. I couldn't stop laughing. Mika totally won.
For lunch (Brooke Ave students have lunch at 11am and recess at 1:30pm. It's to try and get children to eat their sandwiches instead of hyping up on sugar foods at the start of the day) the teachers had pizza, but not ordinary pizza. It's more like a pocket of bread with veges/meat. I can't remember what shop it was from, but it was yummy.
I had one hour of 'relief' next as it's called, when a relief teacher comes in and the main teacher gets an hour off to do marking, organising etc. but we didn't have anything to do being the last day of term so I just read my book.
The next hour my teacher and I had organised games. But oh the pass-the-parcel was a mistake! They all know that only ONE person is going to get the prize at the end, and yet there were tears anyway. Gah. That had me feeling pretty depressed. The game was going well and I went to a lot of effort to make it all up with little tasks after each unwrapping. Instead it just got kids upset. The rest of the games were relay type stuff though, so no tears there. Another student teacher was doing the same thing, and had the same problems though.
So I spent my lunch sorta going 'omg the last thing I did with the kids and I make one of them cry'. But after lunch the kid that got upset came and apoligised for being evil. We sung the song we learned that everybody liked. I swear whenever I see Mika joining in I know it's got to be pretty cool. He hardly approves of any activities undertaken during classtime unless they involve drawing. I'm glad we did the song for a while because it got me feeling happy again and realising that they're not all little terrors.
I bought them all little presents wrapped up but decided it would be best if I told them to put them in their bags to open at home so there wasn't any fighting over who got what colour! I gave them each a toy car (since we did a unit on transport) but I found cars with flowers all over them for the girls (we have 8 girls and 16 boys), as well as a pencil and rubber (with the amount of times a student asked me for a rubber, they're sorely needed), a lollipop and a little shaped wishstone. I got my teacher a box of chocolates and a good pen, one of the ones my woodturning Pa handmakes from wood he picks up around Australia on his travels.
All the kids gave me hugs as they left. My teacher took down my number and said she'd give me a call towards the end of the year. They have a 'fun day' around the end of year with jumping castles and the like that I can come to visit everyone again.
I'll miss you kids!
