My letter to Rep. Calvin Hill

Representative Hill,

I am outraged and thoroughly appalled at your impetuous condemnation of "things that are extraneous and outrages, which I don't think should be discussed with our tax dollars." How can a person stand before their constituents and declare themselves smart enough to serve in the state legislature when they are either too illiterate to read the front of a manual and determine the purpose of it, or too impulsive and unbridled to research their supporting evidence before grandstanding to the House on an issue that will only show them to be a fool? Perhaps you, yourself, should return to school and learn how to read something thoroughly prior to using it to harass educators. These professors have extensive and well-rounded backgrounds in areas which may serve the public and media well, and listing themselves as a free resource for news only serves to improve the image of their respective school - and attract prospective students. Your egocentric behavior has harmed the image and mid- and long-range stability of our university system by portraying Georgia as being in the dark ages.

There is one very significant part of your statement which outrages me beyond belief: "outrages which I don't think should be discussed with our tax dollars." If you can manage to listen to any voice other than your own, you will hear every education and medical expert acknowledge that the primary reason that HIV and AIDS were allowed to gain such a huge foothold in America was because politicians squashed the information about the transmission method of these diseases because they, too, felt that they were outrages which shouldn't be discussed using tax dollars. Even today, the heterosexual black female is at an extraordinarily high risk of contracting this disease because of the chosen ignorance of you and your colleagues who don't think life-changing discussions should use our tax dollars.

My niece is a brilliant young woman who comes from a very conservative Christian home. She is currently enrolled at LeTourneau University in Longview, TX, a Christian school where she is studying child psychology and behavior to facilitate her calling in children's and youth ministry. She will tell you unequivocally that God led her to this school, and that He spoke to her through the following words in their catalog: "Understand that, if all you get from your time here is a piece of paper that enables you to get a job, then we have failed as a University and you have failed as a student." So the next time you seek media attention through your misguided statement that universities should not offer classes that do not help students get jobs - whether in a time of budget cuts or not - I hope you will recall the mission statement from a Christian university which I am very proud to support.
