Summary: Jack wonders what to do with Ianto after Lisa.
Jack doesn't miss the pointed looks Owen keeps sending him as Ianto makes his way carefully around the Hub, picks up their trash like he has millions of times before. Jack can see the rift between his team; the isolation Ianto experiences as the others can barely veil their distrust for him.
Tosh does it in her own shy, uncertain way, while Gwen smiles at him and tries hide the way she doesn't let their fingers touch when he hands her a cup of coffee, and Owen... Owen has screamed and rampaged and demanded Jack sack the Welshman on at least three different occasions so far. Jack wonders if maybe that isn't the best choice, really. If not for the rest of the team, Ianto would probably appreciate an excuse to be away from Torchwood. He would be retconned by company policy and forget all about the whole ordeal with Lisa.
He'll forget the pain of his girlfriend screaming in his arms; he'll forget the months of deceit he went through in order to try and help her; he'll forget the grief he's going through now that Lisa is gone for good; most importantly, he'll forget Jack. He'll forget the monster that ordered him to execute the woman he loved--loves.
Jack doesn't know if he could sack Ianto. He enjoys the Welshman's company far more than he should, and as selfish as it may be, he's not ready to let him go. He's not ready to give up on him.
"Are you really going to let him stay?" Owen asks, standing next to Jack with his lab coat stained brown with alien guts.
"For the time being," Jack says quietly. "Until I figure out what to do with him. If ever."
"What if he does something like that again?" Owen demands. "We can't trust him now that we know what he's capable of."
"He's capable of loving someone enough to put her before his own life," Jack answers easily. "So long as his next girlfriend isn't another partially-converted Cyberwoman, we should be fine."
"Jack, this isn't funny," Owen says hotly. "He put us all in danger."
"And he's repenting for it," Jack replies. "We've all made mistakes." As Owen turns away and throws open the door, Jack adds, full of meaning, "Go back to Gwen, Owen."
Ianto looks up, meets Jack's eyes across the distance, and mouthes, "thank you," as Owen stomps towards the medic bay.
Jack nods in response.
