Title: Past Perfect
Author: mareel
Prompt #: 06 - Children
Prompt table: F
Fandom: Star Trek Enterprise
Rating: G
Pairing, Characters: Jonathan Archer/Malcolm Reed; Madelyn
Genres: Angst, Slash
Word count: 270
Disclamer: I don't own the characters of Star Trek Enterprise and make no profit from them. I do promise to treat them well.
Summary: Through the eyes of a child.

Notes: This is part of a set of ficlets exploring the AU described in the episode "E2" where Enterprise was shifted 117 year into the past and had to become a generational ship. At the time of these events, they have been in the past timeline for approximately fourteen years. Madelyn is Jonathan & Malcolm's daughter; her mother was Esilia, an Ikaaran woman who joined the ship. It refers to the events told in Elegy, and is Jonathan's voice.

“I tried to explain our time shift to Madelyn today.”

“And how did that go?” Malcolm’s smile holds a hint of a smirk, as if he knows very well how well it went.

“About as well as you might expect. She’s six. Past, present, future… I’m not sure how much of the abstract she really understands.”

He pulls me down next to him on the bed, kissing me before replying. “I’m not sure I have the best grasp of it myself. It confuses the hell out of me if think about it too hard. But you’re right to talk to her about it. The topic comes up casually in the mess hall or armoury… and she doesn’t miss much. Better she hear about it from us.”

I sit up as the door opens to the sound of small feet.

“Papa?”

Malcolm lifts her onto the bed and settles her between us. She looks up at me, hesitating.

“What is it, angel?”

Her voice is worried. “Are we going to go backward?”

I’m not sure what I was expecting her to ask, but it’s a fair question. I’d said something about it being a very unusual thing, but she’s obviously been thinking about this. “No, Maddy. That only happened one time. You don’t need to worry about it happening again.”

She didn’t say anything for a little while and I wondered if that was enough reassurance.

“I want to. Mama would be here…”

Malcolm gathers her into his arms and I try to blink back the tears as I meet his eyes. My words fail me.

How do you answer that?
