PoA The Good, The Bad, and the OMGWTF!

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed this movie, from the utter creepiness of the Dementors, to the damn catchy 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' song.

First I gotta compliment the child actors here, they really did a good job. Whether it's due to the new director, or just simply them becoming more comfortable with their parts I don't know.

THE GOOD:

Like I said the acting, but not just for the kids, I love the new Dumbledore, no offense to the memory of Richard Harris but his Dumbledore just didn't have that wacky spark that made the character so interesting.

Alan Rickman IS Snape here, in all his greasy, bitter, glory. The scene where he takes over Lupin's class is just wonderful.

Same for Thewlis and Oldman, Gary just nails Black, managing to be both scary and likable. Thewlis starts out a little rough but things get better in latter acts.

I enjoyed Trelawney but I really had a hard time understanding some of her lines, same with Stan Shunpike.

The Dementors, dear lord these were worth the price alone. Nasty, horrible, wretched things that might make a Nazgul shudder. The little touches, such as the flowers dying and the lake freezing just added to the creepiness.

Also the music, from the choral song in the beginning to Remus's jazzy music might actually get me to pick up a copy of the soundtrack.

THE BAD:

While I enjoyed the movie and I'm happy it didn't simply drag on like the last two, I still think way too much was left out.

The Marauders and their history with James was glossed over, so was the lingering resentment between Remus/Snape.

Which is a pity because I think the two actors were very compelling in their scenes together.

I honestly felt too much backstory was left to the wayside, and I really am annoyed with the treatment of Snape, in all the movies they seem to go to great lengths to make him a two dimensional character.

They seem to ignore his accomplishments in canon and cut the parts that help explain his attitude.

While I liked the fast pacing I felt storyline suffered because of it.

The tension between Hermione and Ron over Scabbers, her growing annoyance with Trelawney, Harry's longing for Hogsmead, and his growing resentment of the Dursleys, were all things that I felt were either glossed over or ignored.

But despite all that it was a really great film, one of the best they've done.
