Last night, after I got off work, I hit a dog. She ran across the road right into the path of my car. Fortunately I had already seen her and had started slowing down, so it was only a light tap. The dog was fine.
As soon as I got out of the car to look at her, she jumped right in the car and hopped to the back seat. Obviously, already used to car rides. I'm not leaving this dog on the side of the road in a heavily industrial warehouse area to get hit by a mac truck so I bring her home. She's filthy, I gave her a bath and looked her over. Seems to be in fairly good health, but some sores and hairless patches that need looking at. She is so friendly and sweet and well mannered, I can't believe she's a random stray. I think she got abandoned.
What am I going to do with her? There's a large part of me that wants to keep her, but I don't know what kind of vet bills she's going to need, or if I really have the time to take care of a dog. My roommate's concerned that her boyfriend's allergic, and if that's the case then she won't be able to help me. I don't want to take the dog to the Humane Society or Animal Control, because if a dog's not in perfect health it usually gets put to sleep. I don't want to be the last human to betray this sweet dog's trust. Looking at her this morning, she looks like a golden retriever, but not full bred - meaning a golden retriever rescue won't help much.
You can't save them all, but how do you know which ones you can save and which ones you can't?
