Author's Notes: This was my first shot at ever writing Hanschen/Ernst, so I hope it's okay. XD I don't really know where I was going with this. I just kinda started writing and.... something came of it. :|

He couldn’t sleep. He could never sleep, not when Hänschen Rilow was on his mind. His thoughts were clouded with memories of him. That day at the vineyard was the strongest, never ceasing to leave his brain. He could still remember how his hair smelled, how his lips tasted, the way his strong hands slid down his chest…

He wanted to stop thinking about him. He wanted to get some sleep, but there wasn’t a way in hell he could. Not as long as they were both alive.

“I love you, Hänschen, as I have never loved anyone.” He remembered every syllable, played every outcome in his mind, but he knew that he’d never get the same reaction out of Hänschen. “As you should” is all he would ever get out of him and it drove him crazy.

The urgency in their kisses, the speed at which their hands were tracing the curves of each others’ bodies… how could that not have meant anything to him? Was he just another notch in Hänschen’s bedpost?

He could barely utter the other boy’s name aloud without feeling an urge to cry.

Every time he closed his eyes it was Hänschen he saw. But he knew he had to be dreaming. Hänschen would never come by. Their moment of intimacy was a mistake. Ernst meant nothing to him, he was sure.

He groaned, punching his pillowcase so hard feathers floated through the air. He lay on his back, staring at his white walls.

“Ernst! Hänschen Rilow is here to see you!”

Ernst practically jumped out of his skin. His mother had to be joking with him. Surely he wouldn’t have a reason to come see him, shy, weak little Ernst.

He stayed quiet and fluttered his eyes closed, hoping he wasn’t dreaming. Hänschen was there to see him. Hänschen was in his house. He opened his eyes again, sliding his shoes on as he walked down the stairs to the kitchen where his mother was waiting. Hänschen was with her, and he had a smirk plastered on his face, never releasing his gaze from Ernst’s. For the first time in days, a smile crept onto Ernst’s face.

Somehow he felt as if he was going to have a good night’s sleep tonight.
