Carl's Movie Mini-Review: The Protector

The Protector
Story's kind of the same as Ong-Bak. Our country-bumpkin hero Tony Jaa has something stolen from him, and he has to travel to the city to get it back. The storytelling is disjointed, seeming to move between different sets with no explanation. There may have been some trademark, movie-ruining Miramax/Weinstein editting involved.

But that doesn't matter.

Action is more over-the-top and athletic than Ong-Bak. The visual tricks are different, though. Instead of replaying stunts from multiple angles, we are treated to insanely long, unbroken cuts, following our hero as he runs all around his enemies' lairs. Another fine spectacle film, but unfortunately the story elements weren't paid much care at all compared to the glorious action sequences. There is an unfortunate section in the middle of the first act where you'll have to sit through some exposition, but otherwise the movie keeps the goodies coming.

Keep an eye out for Jackie Chan.
