Last night,
postapocalypso and I went to the DeVotchKa show for Mission Creek. It was at First Methodist, which was a weird place to have a concert (why not Englert?), especially considering the openers had really filthy mouths.
I was kind of ambivalent about going at first, because I haven't heard their new album and I was really tired. And at one point in the day, everyone had cancelled on me. When doors opened, Jei still wanted to go, so I wandered downtown to go too.
It was amazing. They put on such a good show, and the best part is that it's obvious that they really enjoy it. They're not just playing because they're obligated to, they're doing it because they love it, and that's so much better to watch. Not to mention it sounded so good. The sound guy for the opener was pretty sketchy, but DeVotchka's sound guy was great.
I want that show to be the soundtrack to my life. I want DeVotchKa to follow me down the street with an accordion and a sousaphone and a bouzouki and a motherfucking theremin.
I'm pretty sure at some point, this girl and her gentleman friend were having a religious experience. Throughout the entire show, they were dancing and making these really intense faces and hand gestures, but when the band started playing How it Ends, they were on the ground sobbing. It was insane. And the Crazy Bead Lady (the one who harasses everyone on the ped.mall) was there dancing like a maniac; she was kind of a hot mess, except without the hot.
It was such an experience. I'm really glad I went. I was going to skip on The Decemberists later this month, but now I really want to go.
