The Not-So-Guilty-Pleasure Book Club

Mar 19, 2011 19:45

I was making a post about the book club, but scarykarrey distracted me on Twitter by talking about Zachary Quinto's jawline making her want to do air-humps. And y'all know me; one mention of Zachary Quinto and I'm incoherent with lust for hours, so...

(Yes, you have to wade through pretty pictures to get to the talk about book clubs. First world problems, guys.)

And then Tumblr died on me, which was probably for the best.

Indeed, Mr. Darcy.

ETA: Adding some pictures of Captain Fine for Martha's enjoyment.

So! My idea for the book club.

I wanted it to include books and fanfic, and then Martha suggested that we focus on underappreciated fiction, which I think was a fantastic idea, because most book clubs are all, "Ohh, let's read the new Oprah book and also the new Jonathan Franzen because everyone else is doing it, hur hur."

But I love my trashy genre fiction, and all I want to read anymore is my trashy genre fiction. I'm not even ashamed of it. Except a little bit, when I'm reading something like Tab A + Slot B by the_deep_magic and my boss walks by like, "Oh hey, what are you reading?" and I'm like, "brb going to live in a cave with a bag over my head."

So let's celebrate the books that get you the stink-eye in public!

It's pretty informal. I'm thinking of having a long story and a short story for every month, and a discussion post for each. And also, weekly general reading posts (a la I read blah-de-blah this week, it was awesome!), because obviously not everyone will want to read Jennifer Crusie.

And I thought that beyond just having everyone try to read the same book together, everyone should have their own reading goals for the month. Like, I want to read all of the Harlequin Blaze novels I own, while someone else only wants to read two books.

I feel like there should be more to it, but I don't know what else to include. I've only ever been part of ICPL's book club, and that was more about getting drunk at Sanctuary than it was about reading books. Plus we never read Thong On Fire, even though Foxy Librarian promised me we would (he also promised me he'd read a romance novel two years ago, and he never followed through; this is why I never hit that).

So yeah, anyone else have any ideas? I already started the community for it: thosebooks, because it's about reading Those Books People Shame You For Reading.

Here, watch a filthy music video for my new favorite song, which I am listening to on repeat because I am looking at pictures of Zachary Quinto:
