I got married and left my house at 21. My husband was 21 too. We lived in apartments and rent houses for the ten years we were together. After I divorced him I moved into a two-bedroom apratment with my son. For the first time in my life I was living on my own. I lived in that apartment for two years. I was so completely happy there. It was a small place but it was all mine. I kept it clean and tidy. My ex-husband was such a slob. I truly believe part of the reason why my marriage didn't work out was because first I got married for all the wrong reasons, second I missed out on the crucial dating years or my early 20's, and third I let my husband dictate to me how we should live and even where I should work. Until I had that apartment I had never been on my own, paying my own way, and being completely responsible for myself and my own happiness. My ex-husband told me I would never be able to make it without him, that I would never find anyone I could get along with like him, and that I was being selfish. It's all in the past now. I proved to myself beyond all expectations that I can do it. I made a decision that few women would venture to take. I walked away from a marriage of ten years, took on the responsibilty of rasing my son alone, got my own place, changed jobs, changed careers even, and through out it all I've managed to keep my head steady. It was not been easy but it's all been worth it.
So I moved back in with the folks to save up money for a house of my own. It looks like I will soon get my wish. I still want to teach but I have to pass this stupid certification test. I have taken it so many times! It has caused me no end of anxiety. Why if the school districts are so short of good qualified teachers and is even spending millions of dollars on advertising to get them does the state make it so difficult for people to get certified? I personally find it an affront to me that I should make it through two years in the trenches and still not pass this ridiculous, generalized exam that, in my opinion, doesn't test your knowledge and skills but your patience and sanity. A piece of paper determines if I am a good teacher or not? What trash. When there are people out there in the classrooms who don't do diddly squat? I at least tried to have some fun in my classroom even when my nerves were stretched to the edge. But I truly enjoy being in the classroom and I think what other people don't realize is if adults sometimes have a hard time coping with life's stresses imagine a high-schooler who is carrying even more of life's burdens. I see how this world is rapidly spinning out of control and the pressures are mind-boggling. I feel for today's youth. I can only hope my son grows up well-adjusted.
