Another story, just for you:
We change our desks around every spring when the new teachers arrive, so I spent the last year sitting next to a very nice, very cute, (very married), very quiet male gym teacher. We'd say good morning to each other, but that's pretty much it. For a YEAR. And since he's part-time he'll be leaving soon. At the good bye party (which was Tuesday night) all of the departing teachers were made to sit at the front of the room and be honoured. The rest of us took turns refilling their drinks and chatting. Despite not having much to say to him, I still went up to take my turn and be polite. I topped up his beer, and then was stunned when he suddenly said (in English) "I like Michael Jackson!"
I laughed, in surprise, and then said "Um, me too", and then he went on to tell me (in Japanese) about how in 1996 (or near) he went to an MJ concert in Tokyo. That was pretty much all he had to say, and he was clearly very proud of himself for having busted out some English. It was awesome.
