Well, I thought I would make an entry just for you guys about Ireland.
Besides all the fun things that I have put on my blog, I thought you all deserved an inside look. Right now, things are actually going pretty well minus the cold that I am working very hard to fight off. Today was the oyster festival but really it was just an excuse for us to go into town and go shopping a little. Oh fun!
I think you are also going to get a little roommate vent session. I will start this off by saying I am fine and I am sure that part of this roommate stuff is just because we have been together so much over the last month we have now stopped overlooking some of each others less attractive qualities. For example, my roommate Christine, is useless. She can't do anything in the kitchen and when she does she leaves it a mess. Her idea of cleaning a pan was to rinse it and leave parts of an egg stuck to it. She stuck a pair of scissors in the toaster while it was still plugged in and didn't understand why I almost pushed her over to unplug it quickly - damn girl almost electrocuted herself. She just laughs and thinks its funny. She is afraid of our oven because it "might kill her" I said only if you crawl inside and close the door....
The other girls here have taken to calling her SPT - sara plain and tall because she has no personality whatsoever, but is very clingy all the time. Where u going? Can I come? Oh, its an invite thing, well call me when you are done? What time do you think that will be? Where do you think you will go? SO you will remember to call right? AHHHHH!!!! I really want to cut her hair, dress her up and put some make-up on her, And this is me we are talking about. The other day walking to school she said her backpack kept coming open, and she must just have to pull the zipper tighter - I was like pull them to one side of the pack - so they don't meet at the top and get pushed open- and she was like what??? so I did it and she thought that was the most amazing thing she had ever seen. Yeah, that ones as sharp as a marble.
My other roommate and I get along really well besides the typical roommate moments - on occasion I can find her condescending, and that is a HUGE pet peeve of mine, but oh well. Other than that she has been great for me. Oh, and she thinks that roommate number one "should have been picked off by darwin long ago" Not nice, but I can't help but laugh!
I am buying a new backpack next week as my old one has died. I now have 3 holes in the bottom. Oh, and there is no such thing as duct tape here. They don't have central heat or air, so there is no such thing. They are missing out on all the great things that it is used for other than that. Really a shame. I mention this becasue I was going to duct tape up my backpack, but no such luck. Now I need to buy a new one. And thinking about it - since my last one lasted 8 years, this will probably be the last backpack that I ever buy. Weird. I mean even a PhD I should be able to make it through on the next one.
Its cold here and I am not liking that already - end of September and its already like 55 degrees at noon. It only gets to 50 at night, but still.
I joined the Christian students organization on campus last week. Surprising for a Catholic country, but there were no Catholic groups and I have always found a home in Campus ministry groups, so I decided to give it a shot. For the most part the people are really nice and I have enjoyed getting to know them, but I have to admit to being a little uncomfortable. It is an evangelical style and that is new for me. I have done ecumenical fellowship before, but that was for like joint projects so I didn't really care about the differences, whereas this is a little more pronounced for me. I am not used to every other word in prayer being "father god" as in "I want to thank you father god for bringing us here father god and we lift up to you father god". Not that it is bad or wrong or anything, its just new to me. I also have to be a little more careful about what I say because while they know and respect that I am Catholic, some of them do not think that I have a personal relationship with Christ, so they are on the lookout for openings to enter into conversations that I do not want to have. Last week a baptist minister from the states, who is probably like 27, came to talk to the group and his conversation was great but then he asked me what I thought of a particular part of scripture and I interpreted it the way that I knew how - with an ancient near eastern context and with the idea that the text is inspired by God, not the literal word of - apparently that interpretation didn't go where he wanted it to go so he asked someone else, but he made sure to seek me out during tea and biscuit time to discuss it. He was really a nice guy and very respectful and it was a good conversation, but he made sure that I knew I was welcome to go to his church here in Galway at any time and gave me his e-mail and home address and invited me to a meeting at his house with him and his wife and some other missionaries and their kids the following night. There were people from his congregation coming too, and he was sure that I would love to meet some other people in Galway. Very true that I would like to meet people, but I feel like that would have been one of the most awkward nights of my life. Thank god it was my friend's 21st so I had a legit out, but it was just one of those moments in life....Other than that I really like the people though. They are great and they give me rides! hooray for not walking in the rain!
What is new with you guys? i know there are no really good stories in that, but I will work on more just for you.
Oh! Haha remembered a few - yesterday I met a cute Irish boy at the pub and he asked me for my number. I gave it to him and he called, but I am not sure that i want to call back. He was 23, okay looking I guess, and obsessed with Wayne's world, but for an Irishman that is normal when trying to relate to an American girl. I was drunk, he was there, what else can I say....
Oh, and i am not sure who I told this too but I am not putting on the blog my grandmother sees! THe pubs here have the convience stations - tampons, pads, pain reliever, but then they add condoms (ok, legit in a pub) and then edible see through thongs and oh yes, a vibrator - for those who just can't wait for the fun to start! I am thinking if you really need one of those there are enough drunk men right outside the door! Thought you girls might like those stories! Can I have some good stories from your lives? I miss you guys like whoa. I know not seeing you is just like if I was at school but I don't have my school friends either so not seeing you is doubly as hard, and I can't call which also sucks. But...
I Love you!
