So recently my car has been going through oil a little faster than usual. I got an oil change about 7000 miles ago, and at 2000 miles it was out of oil. I added some and then went for a second oil change at 3k, then it was down to empty at 2000 miles again. Again I added some extra, watching it closely to see what was up.
Well last night the Low Oil light came on again, and the Low Coolant light was also starting to turn on. I opened up the antifreeze reservoir and noticed that there was an oily film on top of the antifreeze, and the reservoir was also quite full.
Figuring that it's better safe than sorry, I took my car into the shop this morning to have it checked out and sat waiting to hear what the damage would be.
(Disclaimer: Andrew isn't a mechanic, otherwise he would have been able to diagnose this problem himself and saved some $$ in the process.)
The mechanic told me that a gasket of some sort had blown in the engine, and oil was leaking into the coolant system of all things. That's the reason why the Antifreeze warning light was coming on despite the full reservoir, and also the reason why I wasn't seeing any oil leaking onto the engine block or onto the ground below.
The upshot of all of this is that I'm getting stuck with a $739 bill because they're going to have to replace the water pump, which was shot all to hell, most of the hoses, flush the system, and replace something to do with the oil. (Like I said, if I was a mechanic I'd be able to figure all of this out for a lot cheaper.) Talk about a pain in the ass.
The good news is that the chemistry quiz I have to take tomorrow is going to be a lot easier than I'd originally thought.
