Lost Paper Trail

Apr 07, 2011 19:02

My bank, cell provider and a retail store were kind enough to inform me of a security breach into their systems where someone scooped millions of emails, mine included. They assured me no personal information was compromised. In the last 24 hours my junk mail folder has bulged. I've had more than 40 junk emails in the last 20 hours. Do I really believe no vital information was taken? I'm not so sure. I don't trust banks and corporations anymore than I trust the spammers.

I'm as paperless as I can be. All the household bills come via email. I use online bill pay for everything. I hate paper mail even when it's necessary. Since the only think keeping the USPS afloat is paper junk mail I will never be mailless. I think that's a new word. I wish to be paper mailless. It's the polar opposite of going postal. I want to be greener and technology is the key.

As a tool the internet is taking over my life and I have only a dumb phone, talk and text. I'm not totally in the wilderness but I have no mobile internet. So far I'm good with the occasional disconnect. I like to go off the web and into actual reality, the matrix.

I do a good amount of online shopping for gifts, event tickets, and things I can't find nearby. Shopping online is paperless .... but with shipping. We pay a price for being paper free, my basic information is all over cyberspace. It's easy to lose track of the usernames and passwords. I have a system that works most of the time.

This new violation of my online life pisses me off. I know it's only junk mail but I loathe spam in all forms. Friends don't even send me forwarded jokes, I have warned them .... "Keep your hahas and LOLs to yourself." Some were offended, but they got the message. I know the recent hackers sold my Hotmail address because this new spam is different from the shit mail I usually get.

I've been contemplating switching my primary email over to G-mail. My 15 year-old all purpose Hotmail address is on every sleazy spammer's server. I have an old Yahoo email that gets spammed less. I occasionally use it to login to news comment pages. My G-mail account is the newest, least proliferated, and I lke the basic G-mail platform. And who doesn't love Google?

Mr Obama is a busy man these days with the budget mess, the economy, three wars, cranky Republicans, crazy tea baggers, and the birther new king pin Donald Trump .... but I wish the president could add strict and severe anti-spamming legislation to the laundry list of dirty business. I believe most Americans, right, left, independent, all races, faith and ethnic origins could agree on the spam issue. Obama could use a slam dunk cause.

If they don't act we should mass distribute the emails of all congressmen and women to the Russian spammers.

life, internet
