big fic woes

Aug 09, 2006 19:58

I've started another novel-length H/D, but this time I'm going to try to be like the beren_writes and the thwax! *loves them* To clarify, I want to write the whole fic, and then post in parts once it's completed.

I think it also may kill me.

When I wrote Amalgam, I had a rough idea of where I wanted to end up - and that changed by the third chapter. heh. It was ( Read more... )

Was it really 3 years on Amalgam? I think if you just take it at the pace it moves and post it when it's ready, people will be here to read it.

Thanks, sweetie. I thought about doing moments and skipping big gaps of time to make it shorter, but then I really wanted the story to unfold slowly. hmmm...

yeah, something like two months short of three years?

I tried that with Amalgam, and it worked for the most part, but then I would follow a minor character and the muse would strike, and then the next chapter would be pushed up one, and then something else would hit me, and suddenly the chart is all messed up.

But I think you're on to something. For my snarry the charting worked better - I actually stuck really close to the original plan. Right now I have pages and pages of characters and research, but hardly any plot. In fact, I think I could plop any pairing into the fic and make it work - and that worries me. I'd really like it to scream H/D, but I'm not sure if it does yet. heh.

I'll have to sit down and go through all of those questions you listed for sure. ;) *hugs* Thanks, my dear! Good luck with your charting too.

You can do it!!

Just have some faith in yourself :) Keep Amalgam and Some by Virtue Fall nearby to remind yourself that you have succeeded before, and you will again.

So, basically, you're going the opposite route of what I'm doing. XP

I did get through a good bit of 18 yesterday and today, though, so that's a good thing.

But you know what? I trust your writing. No matter how long it takes me to actually read through it like I haven't done for Amalgam yet, any time you need help, I'm here. I'm not sure how much help I can be, but you can bounce ideas in my direction if you need a sounding board.

'Course, most of what I know came from you in the first place, so...

heh. Well, with Amalgam, it seemed so easy to post a chapter a week, but then I started writing myself into corners that took a few weeks to reorganize, then College got crazy, and then I went on practicum, and then months went by between chapters...and then my head es-plode! I felt so bad for making the readers wait, and yet I wasn't happy with writing and posting right away- I started getting worried about making each chapter 'perfect' and started doing up to 6 or 7 drafts before posting. (my poor beta)

No worries about not reading it yet. It's not going anywhere. :D

YAY for whipping 18!

Thanks for your offer of help. I just might have to take you up on that. *loves*

I don't know what made me want to post TS yet, seriously. I hate having only a 3 chapter bumper left, and I want to get a few more set up just in case. But hey--you've had to put up with me re-writing every chapter a dozen times...

Eventually I'll read it... ^^;;

Totally! ^_^ I'm pleased with the events, though I know I need to work on it more before I send it to you. I can see all those things you always point out to me that I don't automatically correct yet.

*adores* I'm always here, you know. And it's the least I can do, with all you do for me...

heh. I love the editing process now. It always helps, even if you catch just one word - that change will make the fic better - in my opinion, anyway. heh.

Like we said before - some chapters just come easier than others. I found Amalgam really easy until about ch 17 or 18 too. Then I went OMG! How did plot get in there! GAH! *loves*

YAY! I'd love to hear what you think about it.

Well, I'm glad you're seeing patterns. That's the first battle in getting rid of our own stumbling blocks.

*hugs* Thanks again, sweetie!
