i understand what you are saying and it is a good point, but george bush has actually cited his religion as sources of his policies. i read a time magazine article last year on the way in iraq that detailed the presidents "holy cause"in the middle east and talked about god had given him a mandate to spread the christian government of democracy to the islamic dictatorships of the middle east. THAT is a blatant merge of church and state, beyond just his ideas and background. and the attempts to ban gay marriage, although they all say its about the family and the children, those are such weak arguments that can be easily discounted by the fact that single parents are allowed to keep children and that straight couples are allowed to divorce that the only reason the right is trying to ban it is because of religious reasons. god tells them that homosexuality is bad and so there shouldnt be gay marriage, because marriage is a "god-given gift". they fail to see the legality of the issue. the proponents of banning same-sex marriage say its about the children and "traditional marriage" because if they said what its really about, everyone could call them on their blatant abuse of the separation of religious beliefs and politics. bush appeared before the southern baptist convention to discuss the gay marriage ban, i have the quote a few entries back in my journal if you'd like to reference it (you must be logged in). bush didnt just appear before a republican group to announce it, he appeared before a deeply religious group.

george bush goes beyond just having his personal morals defined by marriage, he DOES create policies based on the church and his hallucinated connection to "god". i see your point, but bush goes above and beyond what you are talking about.
