summer festivals

i already boo-hood a bit about how we're skipping kerrville this year in this post. well, today i got

HI Efrat,

Great to hear from you. How come you guys aren't going to Kerrville this year? Is everything ok?
Anyway, I can't wait to see y'all again. When is the next "event" or party down in your neck of the woods?

As far as Falcon Ridge goes, it's alright. It sure isn't any Kerrville that's for sure, but I've been going every year for the last, I don't know how many... I was doing Falcon Ridge before I ever went to Kerrville. One festival worth checking out is Grey Fox. It's a bluegrass based event that takes place just down the road from Falcon Ridge a week earlier, and is actually more cooperative in terms of people playing music together (versus the "you listen to me play my songs" approach) of Falcon Ridge.

One fun way to do it, if you have can, is to go to Grey Fox (who by the way take volunteers as well and make you work less time) and go directly from there to Falcon Ridge up the road. That way you can have a good 10 days or so in festival land and out in the country camping. You can literally go
from one festival to the other if you want without having to find a place to stay in between. Or, you can camp in the area for a day or two. Joann and I did it this way last summer. It was pretty fun, but there was an awful lot of rain and we were rather uncomfortable through a lot of it.
One further thing. If you want to make a little bit of money, both Falcon Ridge and Grey Fox offer a 50 buck clean up on the Monday after the festival. Does Kerrville still offer 100 dollar for their after- clean up?

Drop me a pocket, or line, when you get the chance.
Best to Dan, and whoever is currently living in the house.

love,
alan
Is Falcon Ridge the only road trip/festival you are going to this summer? I hear that the National Rainbow is going to be in this part of the country.... any thoughts of attending?.. (a charming, crazy-haired flaky musician type - far too many of my friends fit that description, now that i think about it) .

so, i immediately did some research on the grey fox festival he speaks of, and it seems cool. i'm at least glad to know that we'll be seeing alan at falcon ridge, where i've already sent in our applications. we haven't seen him in several years now because he's always too broke to find a way down to kerrville from boston, plus he has that pesky business of being canadian and having no valid u.s. ID.

i'll have to see if dan can muster the time off. since he's a temp at work right now he can't really take any time off too easily. ha ha, gone are the days when he just lived out of the back of his truck, harvested fruit in new england in the fall and wintered in mexico, living on a shoestring. we still like to travel pretty budget but we don't have the freedom of making our own schedules. *sigh* - for this reason i know that rainbow is off the agenda. but all these short and local-ish music festivals sound promising as a substitute.

and: tomorrow is friday the 13th, and we're going to the city to try to catch trey at the hammerstein. i say try because it's sold out ...
