Boston Legal - Philip Quast - Ross Ryan

You know how nothing happens for ages and then suddenly fandom pounces?

Anyway, I'm sure I've had the Boston Legal conversation with more than one person, but I can't remember exactly who besides housepiglet. captain_tulip, I think. Anyway, I've finally gotten around to watching an episode (the first episode of Season 2, randomly), and it's not bad at all, although I suspect it's the more the kind of thing you catch on TV 'when it's on' than make a special effort to watch. So far, anyway *g*. I do have a few questions/observations:

- I was almost blinded by the amount of star power - or possibly by the 'they used to be a star' power - in this episode. I lost count. It's like a 'greatest hits of the '80s and '90s' convention in there. I mean, they even have a Golden Girl.

- William Shatner still has... whatever he had. I really want to find him creepy and lecherous, but all I do is smile indulgently at him, even when he's overtly peering down some woman's blouse in the most disgraceful fashion. And why does he keep saying 'Denny Crane' all the time? WHY? I remembered his name though. As well as Alan Shore, but only because I keep thinking 'David Shore' whenever he's mentioned, and somehow their personalities blend into one even though you know, only one of them is a character. I realise that's kind of weird.

- Apart from that, it's pretty much a variation on Ally McBeal, only not quite as annoying. The woman who testified with a cello has got to be a first, though. I do like it that there are a variety of different personalities and faces - for someone who finds it incredibly difficult to tell people on TV apart sometimes, this show made it very easy. Of course, it helped that I recognised 75% of the cast from elsewhere. The storytelling style was very familiar, which was great as well - I could follow the strands very clearly even without knowing any of the people to begin with.

- Oh, but the editing made me just a tiny bit seasick with all the swooping and jumping and such. Is it always like this? I know House does this kind of thing too, but only some of the time. It's like TV for the five-second attention span. MTV has a lot to answer for.

I think the main deal breaker for this show (in terms of fannish obsessiveness) is possibly that it doesn't have any obvious slash pairings on first watching. Don't even mention the idea of Crane and Shore together to me. Euwww *g*. Mind you, I wasn't fannishly obsessive about L. A. Law, The Practice, etc. either, but I did enjoy them, and I'd definitely enjoy this if other shows weren't higher priority for the time being.

Plus this morning I got hold of Me and Mrs Jones (Philip Quast!) thanks to the kindness of peoplewantducks, who also sent a whole lot of bonus cool stuff (yay!) and in the afternoon mail was a DVD of The Secret Garden (Philip Quast again!) from evila_elf. It's been that kind of day ♥

Now I just need to find time to watch everything...

Lastly, I'm pretty sure no-one else has heard of Ross Ryan, but My Name Means Horse was part of my parents' record collection, and I used to love it to pieces when I was yea big. Today I found out that it was released on CD in 2007, and that nowadays you can even see him singing "I am Pegasus" on YouTube. Oh, the memories *g*
