there are several blogs/ websites/ books about bookmarks- or things being used as bookmarks. like bacon. scabs, possibly with smallpox,or Hitler's Gold Bookmark. (as an aside- i would totally go and watch a movie about this)

they all seem to be focused on what the bookmark is/ what it looks like. none of them seem to have any information on what

I normally just pee a little on the page. I call it marking my book.
