Why I still love Fear Her (and the Doctor and Rose)

Post Journey’s End, we saw a lot of stuff that reminded us of the bad bits - Ten being self-pitying, self-destructive and emo to a point where even those of us who loved him were ready for a change by the time we got to his regeneration. And I won’t deny that Matt Smith was good, and the change was a breath of fresh air.

Totally agree. Series 5 & 6 have left me cold for the most part. Beyond the simple 'god, I can't stand____' character angst I often feel, the stories have, quite simply, left me feeling hollow. I don't invest in the show anymore and while I do still watch it and enjoy bits of it, it is no where near the joy I used to hold for it. I often find myself returning to series 1 and 2, (and 4) just for a sense of nostalgia over what a good story they usually gave us.

Everything about new-new Who leaves me cold - I don't care about the companions, really, (maybe Rory) and I find myself caring less and less about the Doctor, which to me is really sort of sad. I became a fan with NuWho, but eagerly went back to see the previous series and fell in love with old Who as well. And it was always character and story that won out over everything else. To be honest, I think the current version of Who is trying to be too clever for its (and our) own good. It's become so convulted with plots and subplots with all of it, like you said, just sound and fury, signifying nothing.

What I loved about Dr/Rose was that beyond the obvious joys, was that you got the sense the show was really ABOUT something, not just flash, boom, blah. It had heart and depth, the current version has shallowness and too much self-awareness. Fear Her is the perfect example of a show that doesn't explode and yet delivers in a completely satisfying way - its invested in character and story and as an audience member, I appreciate that more than ever.
