Why I still love Fear Her (and the Doctor and Rose)

Jul 04, 2011 13:36

Post Journey’s End, we saw a lot of stuff that reminded us of the bad bits - Ten being self-pitying, self-destructive and emo to a point where even those of us who loved him were ready for a change by the time we got to his regeneration. And I won’t deny that Matt Smith was good, and the change was a breath of fresh air.

But now we’re ( Read more... )

I think it's sort of funny when I see a post like this. I mean, I don't spend my time on LJ (aside posting my fic and fanart), everything related with Doctor Who and Doctor/Rose is on Tumblr for me. We're very active over there(a lot more than here tbh; here seems dead in comparison) and Fear Her is probably one of our favorite episodes ever.

Every time we want to celebrate Doctor/Rose love and cuteness(we do it almost every weekend), we usually livestream Fear Her, Tooth and Claw and The Idiot's Lantern. The part of fandom I've contact with really appreciates this episode, so it's sort of a surprise when I hear people didn't like Fear Her. Me and my friends (and a lot of people I know) on Tumblr live a Fear Her appreciation life ahahahahaha

Anyway... I agree about missing the show like it used to be, but I won't write about it XD I talked too much about it already,so... LOL Let's not got here.

I've always held Fear Her close to my shipper heart; it's such a sweet, fulfilling episode that really expresses the intimacy of their relationship, the comfort they have with each other. I have felt recently a pull towards Doctor/Rose once again though my connection to Who at this point is non-existent considering Torchwood is in America now and presumably completely separate from 11 and co. (whom I really don't care for). You can kilodalton have put into precisely what seems to be missing now.

Totally agree. Series 5 & 6 have left me cold for the most part. Beyond the simple 'god, I can't stand____' character angst I often feel, the stories have, quite simply, left me feeling hollow. I don't invest in the show anymore and while I do still watch it and enjoy bits of it, it is no where near the joy I used to hold for it. I often find myself returning to series 1 and 2, (and 4) just for a sense of nostalgia over what a good story they usually gave us ( ... )

Awww ((blush)) thank you so much! I'm glad you like the meme! =D

Fear Her could have been every bit as bad if it hadn’t been for Rose’s ability to read the Doctor and rescue him, not just with a pickaxe and a plan but also with a quiet word about keeping your fingers out of the jam.

You are so right about this!

that quiet emotional commitment, the building up of character and background that brought those people to life for us, so much so that when Rose obediently spits gum into the Doctor’s hand we see an entire relationship.

I completely agree - the shows come to life as stories to me because of these nuanced character investments you mentioned. Right now however, to me at least, it really feels like Character A does Action B because the script calls for it, not for any more organic reason. That makes it very hard for me to invest in the characters, because I don't feel like I know them, let alone really "care about" them.
