Calgary 2009

My trip to Calgary was exactly what I needed - five days away to just catch up with friends and relax a little bit.

Wed. July 1:
My sister and her boyfriend dropped me off at the airport around 7AM, thanks for the early morning pick up/drop off!  The trip didn't get off to the best start as some idiot checked in (with TWO pieces of luggage) and failed to board the plane.  So as airplane regulations state, that idiot's luggage must be removed.  In order to do so, they had take all the luggage off, then put it all back on.  At least I got a head start on movie watching: Monsters vs. Aliens, then Ice Age 2.  So needless to say I was late getting in, and as a result Andrea and Korwin had to wait a little longer than expected, as even the online flight status was incorrect.  Also, no free snacks on Air Canada - what is air travel coming to these days?!?

First stop: food.  We ate at Subway.  Two hour time difference kills me when it comes to hunger.  We then googled what sort of Canada Day festivities were going on, and found ourselves at Prince's Island, which was more geared towards kids, so we walked to the Calgary Tower for a nice view of the city, the mountains and flights taking off and landing.  The glass floor was scarier than it looked, but made for some good pics.

That night we walked to McMahon Stadium to see the Stampeders lose to the Alouettes.  It rained, got cold, then stopped raining, then rained again, then stopped and warmed up a bit.  That was my first CFL game, and first american football game.  I guess my chances of going to an NFL game are pretty slim considering I don't live along the border anymore.

Thurs. July 2:
Andrea and Korwin went to school, and I texted the boys until they woke up. lol.  Chun, Pete S and Brandon picked me up, then we picked up Chun's friend Logan and headed to the mountains.  I love nature.  We hiked Johnston's Canyon, a relatively easy hike with a paved path, and beautiful waterfalls along the way.  We made two stops in the town of Banff pre- and post- hike.  I tried a Subway wrap, and I must say it was delicious, and less than 4$.

Once back in Calgary we went out for all u can eat sushi.  Mmmm.. we were exhausted and full, but it was worth it.

Fri. July 3:
I lounged around Andrea and Korwin's until they returned from school.  We played drinking tic tac toe, had a few more beverages, then headed down to Stampede to meet up with some of their friends.  We walked around the infomercial hall then stood in line for about an hour to get into Nashville North - a giant tent/bar with a country band : Adam Gregory.  I'm not a huge country fan, but I liked his music.  We stayed until we were tired from dancing, stopped for a quick snack (pineapple whip) then C-trained back home.

Sat. July 4:
Awesome breakfast: veggies in scrambled eggs w/ cheese wrapped in a tortilla w/ veggie breakfast patties and hash browns on the side.  We googled to find something to do.  Andrea found Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump - an interpretive centre.  So we drove roughly two hours South (with a stop at a candy store on the way), and were pleasantly surprised with the exhibit.  Back to Calgary for yummy vietnamese food, then Andrea and Korwin dropped me off at Pete and Chun's apartment.  Brandon, Pete S, Joey, and Jay were there too.  We had a few drinks then went out for a bit.

Sun. July 5:
Woke up, packed, Pete, Chun, Pete, Brandon and I ate at an all u can eat asian buffet = bad idea.  Pete showed Brandon and I where he works, then dropped us off at the airport.  Both Brandon's and my flight were slightly delayed.  I watched Street Fighter, and He's Just Not That Into You on the flight home.  Marcin picked me up from the airport, and that's the end of vacay.

Siu & Tom will be here on Sat. July 11! 4 days away!

I'll be back in Windsor on July 17 for quick wknd to attend Nicole and Mike's wedding on July 18!
